John Brougher Obituary

Brougher

John F. Brougher Jr.

John (he preferred to be called Jack) passed away at home on November 22, 2023 with his wife and son by his side. He had struggled with cancer and dementia for several years. Jack will be truly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. They will always remember his warm smile, gentle sense of humor, and love of storytelling.

Jack was born on April 29, 1943 in Washington, DC. His parents, John F. Brougher and Kathryn F. Brougher, lived in Arlington, Virginia, and later moved to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where Jack graduated from high school. He attended Oberlin College, but enlisted in the army after two years and served as a helicopter mechanic in Vietnam. Jack completed his undergraduate degree at George Washington University and earned a Master's from American University. In 1971 he met his future wife on a trip to the USSR to study Russian. Jack and Valentina Golondzowski married in 1973, and ten years later celebrated the adoption of their son John Lee from Korea. Jack also started working at the Department of Commerce in the International Trade Administration in 1974. His work increasingly involved travel to Russia and the other republics of the Soviet Union. He retired in 2011 as the Director, Office of Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia. Jack enjoyed his work, valued his colleagues, and received a number of awards, including in 2003 the Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Achievement In Federal Service.

Jack treasured the time he spent with family and friends. In retirement he also enjoyed traveling with his wife and son to different parts of the USA, Canada and Europe.

Per Jack's wishes, he was cremated. Celebrations of Life will be held in 2024. Memorial contributions may be made to the Inova Schar Cancer Institute at support.inova.org/page/3749.

Jack was a high school classmate. Just the nicest guy you can imagine. At the same time a tremendous running back and sprinter. Class vice president too.

Jack was very bright and he was my mentor in high school. We played football together and he was a great athlete in all sports. We were neighbors and traveled together home after football practices and he always had a positive attitude even with the cold and dreary practices. We lost touch until recently but I will always have fond memories of our friendship.
