CARMODY JOHN J. CARMODY, JR. "Coach" (Age 85) John J. Carmody, Jr., of Washington, DC, passed away peacefully in his childhood home on Friday, July 16, 2021. May he rest in peace. John ("Coach" to those who know and love him) was born in Washington, DC on May 31, 1936 to John J. and Helen Carmody, and was the middle of five siblings - Margaret C. Marcou, the late Helen C. Steele, Kathleen C. Rowe, and the late Kevin W. Carmody. John graduated from the College of the Holy Cross (Class of 1958) and Georgetown University Law School (Class of 1961). But everyone who met John soon found out that he was a proud graduate of Gonzaga College High School (Class of 1954), to which he dedicat ed countless hours and love until the time of his passing. Throughout his long career as a lawyer, John always found time to help out those he loved and held dearly, whether as General Counsel for Gonzaga, Board Member/soccer coach for Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, mentor to colleagues and family, or dedicated friend. Coach was an avid gardener (often expanding his talents into the yards of his neighbors and children), sports fan and tennis player. He took up cycling later in his life, and was often seen biking all over Washington to get to his meetings or to see family and friends. John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary Ann (Oetting) Carmody; his loving children, John W. (Christine) Carmody, William J. (Pam) Carmody, Michael J. (Stephanie) Carmody, and Chrissy (Lawrence) Carmody; and his four grandchildren whom he adored, Claire and Will Carmody, and Colin and Ryan Carmody. Relatives and friends may call at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 5949 Western Avenue NW, Washington, DC, on Thursday, July 22, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church, 900 North Capitol Street NW, Washington, DC, on Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m., followed by interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Carmody-Lynn Memorial Scholarship, Gonzaga College High School, 19 Eye Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001 or the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area Chapter, 8180 Greensboro Drive, Suite 400, McLean, VA 22102. www.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.comwww.COLLINSFUNERALHOME.com

I meant to say I am a family friend, but also Mary Ann´s classmate at GU. We had many good times there and I hope Mary Ann and her kids will be able to remember the good times they had with John. Ursula

God bless you John, room mate dorm mate and great friend at the Cross. Will always remember the details of Gonzaga high school which I heard daily and nightly since you never went to bed before two. A great person whom God is rewarding.

John was a beloved classmate at Holy Cross. Few in our class of '58 had more friends than did John. Will never forget our hitchhiking from Worcester to Baltimore (my home) and DC for Thanksgiving in 1956 or 1957. He was a key contributor to our lacrosse team going 8-3 in our senior year, which success earned the sport varsity status at the college. I'm sure I speak for many Crusaders in saying that I will miss him greatly. God rest him.

Dear Carmody Family, John was a "best" friend at the Cross as dorm mate and on the lacrosse team. The last time we met was at our 50th reunion and he was a lively as ever. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. Bill Strong

One of the outstanding aspects of my years at HC came well after Keven Brothers died young and more timely deaths ensued - those that followed were all not necessarily pals but given the closeness of on-campus life, they still were vivid and usually real and personal. The earlier passing's confused of course, but now for me at least they provide comfort and hope from those precious years on the hill. Good bye my brother, I know you are face to face Glory.
