John Frederick Downer

Of Alexandria, VA passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025 as a result of cholangiocarcinoma, at age 80. Born on April 2, 1945, Jack grew up in Herndon, VA. He had strength, focus, and perseverance, which he tested frequently on long bicycle rides, fishing, and with his love of the Washington Commanders, to whom he built a small historic shrine. Jack graduated Herndon High School in '63, playing Football and Basketball. After graduation he joined the Navy, attaining the Electronics Technician 2nd class. He left the Navy to work in telecommunications, beginning at Bell Atlantic and retiring after 32 years with Verizon. Jack stayed very active cycling, and for over 15 years raised money and rode in the Tour de Cure. He is survived by his son Ross Downer, his siblings, and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Valerie Andrews Downer. There will be a service for Jack at Herndon United Methodist Church, 701 Bennett St Herndon, VA on Thursday, December 18 at 11 a.m. with a reception afterward.
