John Gaine Obituary

Gaine

John Gerald Gaine "Jack"

On Saturday, June 25, 2022, from a broken heart, John Gerald ("Jack") Gaine passed peacefully at his home in Washington, DC. Beloved husband and father, he is preceded by 11 days in death by his wife Patricia ("Tish") of more than 45 years, who passed away on June 14, 2022. Jack is survived by his three children, Courtney Cuddy (Chris) of Decatur, IL, Margaret Hough (Michael) of Dublin, Ireland and John Gaine (Carissa) of Bethesda and by his 10 adoring grandchildren, Carson, Caroline, Connor, Elizabeth, Gwendolen, Christopher ("Fitz"), John ("Judge"), Patrick, Ann McBride ("Bridie") and John ("Jack"). He is also survived by his siblings, Virginia, Maureen McGowan, and Patrick (Marybeth) as well as countless in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jack is also preceded in death by his grandson John Connolly, his parents, John and Elizabeth, and his sisters Margaret, Elizabeth ("Betty") Keegan, Joan Hutchison, and Patricia ("Patsy").

Born in Bradley Beach, NJ on October 13, 1942, the seventh of eight children, he was raised in Chevy Chase, MD and graduated from Georgetown Preparatory School, Notre Dame University and Harvard Law School. After his admission to the bar in 1968, Jack practiced law at Breed, Abbott & Morgan in New York. In 1977, Jack was appointed by President Jimmy Carter as General Counsel of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission. After leaving government service in 1981, he became an expert in the rapidly growing futures industry. In 1998, Jack became President of the Managed Futures Association, a position he held until 2008 when he became President Emeritus. In 2013, he was elected to the Hall of Fame for the Futures Industry Association.

Jack was notorious for his incredible wit and sense of humor which he often used to persuade, disarm and, most importantly, to entertain. He was the consummate storyteller and loved to engage family and friends, and his toasts at family weddings were legendary. Jack loved being a grandfather and relished every minute he spent with his grandchildren. Ultimately, Jack made it only 11 days on Earth without his beloved Tish, longer than his friends and family ever thought he could. All who loved them are comforted knowing they are reunited.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3630 Quesada St NW. A Celebration of Life will follow. A viewing will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29 at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Msgr Smyth Endowment Fund (Office of Development Blessed Sacrament School, 5841 Chevy Chase PKWY., NW Washington, DC 20015)

Jack was a Coast Guard lawyer with me in D.C. I even stayed in his apartment on East End Avenue for a time when I moved to NYC. He kept us laughing. I still remember his bachelor party.

I was thunderstruck, Courtney, to hear this news. We chatted about family, siblings and parents at our CCC dinner several years ago.
We/I lost both our parents a few years back, but not in this sort of devastating back-to-back, and "only sort of" realize how harsh this for you and your siblings.
Prayers and good wishes to you all.

I'm so sorry to hear of Jack and Trish's passing. Jack was an incredible person and every minute working with him at MFA was filled with humor and fun! I learned so much about the industry from him and will miss him. Best wishes to the family.

My sympathy to the children and their families on the loss of Jack and Tish. I roomed with Jack our senior year at Notre Dame and I can attest to his kindness, humor, athletic ability and card playing skill. In four years of knowing Jack well, I never quite understood but was amazed at how he was a top student without ever once seeing him open a book! Jack was a fantastic friend who did not avoid military service in the Vietnam Era like so many did. When your looking down on us, squeeze in a prayer or two for me Jack.
