John Georgelas Obituary

GEORGELAS
JOHN GEORGE GEORGELAS

Colonel, USA (Ret.)

A Hero in War and Peace

JOHN GEORGE GEORGELAS, 89, of Mclean, Virginia, in the company of his loving wife and family, died of natural causes in Arlington, Virginia on January 14, 2007.

Born in the coal country of Utah in 1917 and educated at the University of Utah, the Colonel entered the United States Army in 1940 as a commissioned officer.

During World War II he participated heroically in the European theater of operations. As a member of General George S. Patton's Third Army, Colonel Georgelas fought his way from Casablanca to Tunisia, Sicily, Anzio, Naples, Rome, Southern France, Ardennes-Alsace, and Germany including Munich and Berteschgaden.

His military decorations were many including the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with device for Valor, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal together with numerous campaign ribbons.

In 1946 following the war, Colonel Georgelas returned to the U.S, where he married Angelina Floor Georgelas. His Army career subsequently took the Colonel and his family throughout the United States and around the world. His many postings included California, Oklahoma, Kansas, Greece, South Korea, Spain and Washington, DC, where he finally settled. In Washington, he served at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In 1964, on nights and weekends, Colonel Georgelas and his wife started a home-building company in McLean, Virginia. His company, over the next three decades, built many award-winning homes in the Northern Virginia area, primarily in Mclean. He established a reputation for being the pre-eminent builder of the finest custom homes in Northern Virginia.

As a natural progression of his home-building expertise and drawing upon his unique talents in the real estate industry, Colonel Georgelas commenced residential land development in the McLean area in 1973. His subdivisions are among the most prestigious in the Washington, DC area. To this day, his company is carrying on his legacy with residential development projects in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and in Delaware.

In further expansion of his businesses, Colonel Georgelas' companies embarked upon commercial real estate development in 1978. These endeavors grew and have resulted in the creation of millions of square feet of office, retail, and industrial projects in the Washington area. Included in this are many significant office projects in Tysons Corner, Virginia with additional office development in that market continuing today.

Internationally, the global reach of the companies which Colonel Georgelas founded extended to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Guam, and Russia. Today his companies have significant developments underway in France.

He loved to travel which he did extensively. As recently as October 2006 he journeyed with his extended family to Munich, Germany for Oktoberfest continuing on to the island of Crete to visit his ancestral home.

Colonel Georgelas is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Angelina Floor Georgelas; sons, Theodore (Rachel Sampson), Timothy (Martha Karas) and Anthony (Carol Crandall) and daughter-in-law, Vickie Jacobson the wife of his son, the late Thomas Georgelas. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17 at Murphy's Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, Virginia. There will be a prayer service that night at 7 p.m.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 18 at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church at 3149 Glen Carlyn Road, Falls Church, Virginia. Immediately following the funeral ceremony there will be a reception at the church hall. Interment will be at a date to be announced in the future at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church.

Uncle John was such a strong, caring person. He was loved by so many of us. I know too well how much his sisters were so proud of him (my Mom especially). I remember one family get together when Uncle John was sharing memories of being in Greece in the military. He was so proud, as were the other military people there, when he had much improved his Greek speaking skills & was able to give his farewell speech in Greek. As he left our get together that day he wanted to teach me a Greek phrase he especially liked. Now it is time for me to say it to him: “Kalee Adamosee” Theos Yianni (au revoir, Uncle John)
S’agapo ke Moo Leepeese! (I love you & I miss you)
To Aunt Angie (Kate), I am so sorry for your loss but I know how blessed you were to have been able to share such a long life together with your devoted husband. To the rest of my Georgelas family, it has been a year of losses. May we always celebrate the lives of those we loved that have left us & to the memories we will never forget. Zoee se sas! (where’s my Greek keyboard?) Love you all! Neekee

Colonel John was an outstanding officer who sedved with the Third Infantry Division Field Artillery in WW II from Fedela to Berchtesgaden. He was one of the few who, despite being twice wounded, went all the way with the Third. He was a staunch supporter of veteran activities and will be missed by his fellow Marnemen in the Third Inf Div Society Anyone who fought with the Third as he did in the bitter battles of WW II deserves to rest in peace and I'm sure he is!

Dear Georgelas Family, I am the daughter of Lt. Col. (ret) Thomas E. Shaughnessy, who served with "Johnny" (as he always called him) in World War II in the 3rd Infantry, 9th FA Batallion. Dad served 27 years in the Army. I was born at Ft. Lewis so I'm proud to be a real Army brat. If I remember correctly, my dad, Tom, was Johnny's best man at his wedding. My father told me many times how beautiful the ceremony was in the Greek Orthodox Church. My father passed away in 2005, just 5 months after my mother, Neva, died. My Dad had full military rites by the Utah National Guard at his burial in Wasatch Lawn Cemetery in Salt Lake City. He did say a few times that he would like to be buried in Arlington. I tried to write down some of my Dad's war experiences but only got to Sicily and Anzio Beach. Does your family have your father's war stories written down to pass on to future generations? My parents have 8 great grandchildren that I want them to appreciate what sacrifices your father and my father went through together for our country.
I send my deepest sympathy to your family at this time.

The unfortunate death of my dear friend Colonel John Georgelas gave me and my wife Katerina as well as my children Charalambos and Dimitris a great pain.
Unfortunately the coming summer we will not have the pleasure to meet Colonel Georgelas as we did regularly the past years during his visits to Vamos, Crete
-the land of his father where the roots of the big and historical Georgelas family exist.
Jianni my friend today we prayed for you with the priest at the church of Vamos where your ancestors are. We will all miss you and we will always remember you,

I have admired Uncle John all my life, not only because of the sacrifices he made as a member of this country's armed forces, but especially because of his dedication to his family. Hard to believe that he was zooming around Europe in a rented car just a couple of months ago! We will mourn his passing, but we must always remember to celebrate his life!

I feel privileged to have known John Georgelas and with a heavy heart say fond farewell to him. The Colonel was an inspiration to be around and he will be sorely missed. His unassuming and gentle manner belied the heroism and determination he displayed while serving his country and making it a better world for us all. Thank you Colonel, may you rest in peace till we meet again. To Angie and the entire Georgelas family: on behalf of my wife Patti, my children and myself I wish strength and resolve.
