I knew John primarily from interactions at technical meetings, where he always seemed to be at the center of a dust-devil swirl of energy and laughter. He will be missed indeed.

It is a great sadness to me to know that John is dead. I will remember him as a great scientist. I will never forget that he supported me when I was a PhD student, and gave me my first opportunity to come and lecture in the United States.

To his family I want to express my sincere and deepest condolences.

John ("Jack, as he was known to his many friends) was a scientist of considerable stature, foresight, and strength of conviction. I especially held him in high esteem for the staunch position that he took as an advocate for the dental research program at the National Bureau of Standards. This program had produced remarkable advances in dentistry, and continues to do so even today. Without his support, this program might not be in existence today and it almost certainly would be less of a factor in advancing dental health care than it is. The existence of the dental research program is a legacy left for future generations by Jack Hoffman and his dental research colleagues of the1970s.

I owe much to you, John. You were a good friend, enduring mentor, and invaluable role model to my professional life. May you rest in peace with knowing that you leave behind unparallel legacy to our polymer community.
