I met John L in about 1957 when I was 11 years old and living in the wilds of Panama overlooking the canal. As I recall, he was checked in to the Tivoli Hotel and had a large turtle in his bath tub, alarming the hotel staff. Over the years, I heard his wonderful tails of pet sloths, known by name, in his home in the jungles of Surinam. My children built turtle habitats, referring to his book. His electric cars, long cape, cigar, booming voice, great stature, and willingness to hold forth on many subjects in nature convinced me, at a young age, that John L was a true genius who loved animals, teaching and the future. He was a wonderful man.

Anybody who worked at NCR during the 70's through the 80's will remember John fondly as our own "Mr. Wizard" with his colorful array of electric cars, forward-looking research projects and non-standard garb. Government agencies don't always have the leeway for more creative endevours, but John made his own. Sorry about your loss he was a fun and interesting guy to know.
