He received a B.S., Ohio University 1932, M.A. 1936, Ph.D. Ohio State 1955; teacher, Ohio Schools 1932-1937; head of history and Speech Dept., Wyoming, Ohio Schools 1937-1941; Speech and history teacher in Hamilton, Ohio 1941-1950; Continuing Education Department Michigan State University 1950-1956; Specialist in general Adult Education, U.S. Office of Education, 1956-1958; Director of Graduate School for the U.S.D.A., 1958-1981; President of Beacon College, Washington, DC, 1982-1983; Chairman of World Federalist Washington chapter, 1958-1960. Avid tennis player member of Edgemoor Club. Firm believer in life long learning. Survived by his wife, Mary Catherine Jennings and three children, John Bernard Holden, Jr. of Dallas, TX, Peggy Thuotte of Port Ludlow, WA and Charles Holden of Fairfax, VA; his sister, Martha Jane Ball of Lima, OH; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mass, Saturday, September 3, 10 a.m. at St. Dominic's Priory Chapel, E St., between 6th & 7th Sts., S.W., Washington, DC. Memorial Service, Sunday, September 11, 1 p.m. at Harbour Square Club Room, 510 N St., S.W., Washington, DC.
