John Kirkendall Obituary

KIRKENDALL, JOHN STANFORD

John S. "Stan" Kirkendall, age 66, died on December 21, 2003 at Fairfax Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Carol E. Kirkendall of McLean, VA; two sons, John Scott Kirkendall and Clay K. Kirkendall; a daughter, Julia K. Kirkendall; two grandsons, Darren and Billy Kirkendall, all of Northern Virginia, and several nieces and nephews. Kirkendall was a native of Camden, NJ and the son of Etha and Jack Kirkendall. A long-time resident of La Jolla, CA, he worked as a Senior Staff Engineer for Cubic Corporation for 23 years. He relocated to McLean in 1970 and was key in implementation of the Fare Collection System for the DC area METRO, among other projects. In the 1990's he was self-employed and won an almost unprecedented NIH grant, overcoming peer-review and other challenges occasioned by lack of association with a major academic institution. Kirkendall was a 1960 graduate of Harvard College with a BA in physical sciences and minors in French and Russian. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1961-62, as the Assistant to the President of UTL Corp. from 1970-73, and was a member of ASNE, AAAS, USN Institute, and Harvard Club of D.C. Kirkendall was known for his great intelligence, his dry wit, his ability to fix almost anything, his pride in his children and his love of music. Private services were held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 5216 , Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216 / #800-242-8721 / www.americanheart-donate.org; and the McLean Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 291, McLean, VA 22101.

I met Stan in Washington DC in 1969 when he was visiting a business associate, the father of a girl friend. As I was planning to move to California he asked if I would babysit his three children while he and Carol went to Europe. That is how I met Carol and Stan and their family. I remember Stan as a warm, fun and intelligent human being with a wonderful twinkle in his eye. Unfortunately, although I have

been in phone contact, we have not had a chance to visit since the early 70s. I am very saddened by his death but his warm personality

will stay in my memories. I send my

deep conolences to Carol, Poncho, Clay and Julie.

Dear Stan-

Because of you-

I received an "A" on my Senior High Science Fair Project.

Because of you-

I got to come to California for my College Graduation gift.

Because of you-

I met your friend Tom and fell in love.

Because of you-

I have three of the most amazing children in the world.

Because of you-

I have your troops, “Poncho,” Clay, and Julia in my life.

Because of you-

my favorite sister moved to Virginia and became a “tycoon.”

Because of you-

we were all challenged to think more critically.

Because of you-

I mourn your enormous loss to your wife and children. . . and to me and mine.
