John Robert Lampe

John Robert Lampe of Columbia, Maryland passed away on September 6, 2024 at age 88 after a brief illness. He is profoundly missed by his Family and many friends and Colleagues. He was born December 7, 1935 in Duluth, Minnesota and attended the Blake School in Minneapolis. He graduated from Harvard University in 1957 and attended the London School of Economics. He served in the US Army and then was a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, at the Embassy in Belgrade. He then returned to Academic work and completed his Doctorate at the University of Wisconsin. He taught at the University of Maryland and was Chairman of the Department of History. He was also Secretary of the East European Program and a Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Willson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC. He is the author of Balkan Economic History, Yugoslavia as History, and numerous other publications. He retired as an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Maryland and continued work on editing and reviewing publications. He maintained his intellectual vigor and independence with the help of his friend and caregiver Victoria Ohene for the past nine years. He is survived by his devoted son, Jon Delange and grandson, Joshua Delange. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita. A Service of Christian Burial is to be planned in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
