A retired Navy Captain, died on Friday, December 8, 2006. He lived at Patriots Colony in Williamsburg, VA.
Captain Merrick was a native of San Antonio, Texas. He served in the Marine Corps from 1942 until 1944, when he was commissioned as an Ensign USNR. He served in the pacific theater of operations during WWII and participated in various combat operations including the Okinawa invasion and the subsequent surrender of the Japanese. He was commissioned in the regular navy in 1946 and took part in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll.
He served in various units of the Atlantic and Pacific fleets and during which he commanded the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Sampson, the amphibious ship USS Cleveland and was the Commander of Amphibious Squadron 7 during the Vietnam War.
Captain Merrick was a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. He also attended the college of William and Mary, was a graduate of the George Washington University, the Armed Forces Staff College and the National War College.
His first wife, Hannah Margaret Merrick died in 1991 and their daughter, Anne Wallis Arends died in 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Barney Merrick of Williamsburg; sons, John L. Merrick Jr., Michael L. Merrick and Kenneth L. Merrick; brother, Col Robert L. Merrick; two sisters, Dorothy K. Halcomb and Meline M. Mears; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held on Tuesday morning, January 23, 2007, at 11 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.
