I have a humorous recollection of Maj. Gen. Mitchell from the autumn of '88. At that time, I was TDY (temporary duty) to the army chief of staff's (General Vuono's) 36-member ROBUST TF (task force) from the Baltimore District, Corps of Engineers. Maj. Gen. Mitchell was the task force director. During the course of the few months that I was a task force member, Maj. Gen. Mitchell expressed his fondness for the well known brainstorming methodology known as "skunk works". One day he was briefing the task force on the foregoing, and I was fading in and out. It wasn't that Maj. Gen. Mitchell wasn't interesting to listen to. Rather, it was that I hadn't been getting much sleep due to the fast paced tempo and long hours required to carry out his directives (which included a high profile inspection of Dr. (Maj. Gen.) Rumbaugh's Walter Reed Army Medical Center). Sometime during the course of said briefing (while I was fading out), Maj. Gen. Mitchell said very loudly and distinctly, "Isn't that correct, colonel?" Of course, he was referring to me, a mere major at the time. Having been singled out for "promotion" by Maj. Gen. Mitchell, I just naturally received the "adrenaline" I needed to keep me wide awake and attentive from then on out!

Thanks boss for taking care of us, it was a pleasure to serve with you in WBerlin. They say old soldiers fade away. True yet some shine bright in our hearts, time will pass and memories fade, but the legacy of warriors are alive and well in the soldiers of today thanks to outstanding men like MG Mitchell.
