John Reilly Obituary

John Patrick Reilly (Age 87) of Silver Spring, MD passed away on October 28, 2024. Beloved husband of Lynette Bielat Reilly; father of Kenneth Patrick Reilly (Tracy Reilly), Maureen Ellen Reilly (Douglas Fischer), and Alan Michael Reilly. Grandfather of Joseph Patrick Reilly, Benjamin Reilly Fischer, Madeline Rose Fischer and Kateland Jean Harte. Brother of Kathleen Swanson and the late Helen Therese Pitts.

An electrical engineer with Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory for over 40 years, Pat received the D'Arsinoval Award for lifetime achievement in bioelectromagnetics and was a Fellow of IEEE. His scientific contributions improved the safety of countless essential electrical devices. He authored many articles in the fields of radar and bioelectricity, several essential textbooks, and recounts his early years in Snake Music, a Detroit Memoir. Pat played guitar, harmonica, flutes, percussion and the didgeridoo. He was musical director for A Band for all Seasons and the JP Jazz Quartet.

Private interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled for family and friends at the Riderwood Celebration Room at a later date to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to Peabody Conservatory of Music, Baltimore, MD.

Pat Reilly was a self-confident hard-working family man. He took life´s challenges head on and mastered them. If he became interested in a pursuit, he became expert at it. His successes in science, music and as author of many published works attest to his value as a productive and influential citizen. Pat´s legacy lives on in his family and society.

I shall treasure every memory of my friend and colleague. I remember him not only with a sense of a great loss at his passing, but also with gratitude for how he invariably brought deep study, curiosity, and enthusiasm to his many pursuits. Although some of Pat´s achievements have been duly noted -- the D´Arsinoval Award among them, his chief goal was never to earn honors, but rather to solve interesting problems, and to satisfy his own boundless curiosity, especially in areas where biology and physics intersect. His beautifully written memoir about his youthful life in Detroit is a keepsake, along the coffee mug I won from him as a reminder of our sometimes too-risky adventures in a canoe.
