DR. JOHN M. STUBSTAD May 1949 – March 2021

Dr. John M. Stubstad, 71, residing in Springfield VA, passed away at his home in March of 2021. He was born May 1949 in Brooklyn NY, a son of the late John F. and Dorothy Stubstad. He is survived by a brother, William Stubstad, and daughter, Erika Stubstad.



John graduated from The State University of New York in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering degree, in 1972 with a Master of Science degree and went on to earn his PhD from The Georgia Institute of Technology as a Doctor of Philosophy.



In 1998, John was awarded the DoD Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the highest honor the Federal Government can grant a career civilian employee, in recognition of his distinguished accomplishments as Deputy Director, Surveillance and Interceptor Technology Directorate, Technical Operations Deputate, Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. In 2008 John was conferred the rank of Meritorious Executive in the Senior Executive Service by the President of the United States.



John was awarded the OSD Certificate of Service in recognition for 30 years of Federal Service in 2014 and retired three years later as the Director of Space & Sensor Systems at the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense. John proudly served his country throughout his life.



John was a voracious reader with an extensive and diverse library collection, ranging in topics from thermodynamics, applied mechanics, racing and sport car design, historical memoirs, history, travel, suspenseful spy novels, legal thrillers to a complete mechanics manual to start the restoration of his 1973 Lotus Elan. He was thoughtful, eloquent, had a dry sense of humor and a calm perseverance. John loved to travel both domestically and internationally. He was an avid photographer who would often be seen with a camera in hand, capturing friends, family and the amazing places he visited.



His family will receive family and friends at 1:45 p.m., Friday October 14, 2022 at Arlington National Cemetery, services will follow at 2 p.m.
