Jonathan Weintraub Obituary

On Saturday, June 29, 2024, Jonathan William Weintraub, of Bethesda, MD.
Beloved husband of Judith Heimlich; devoted father of Lisa Weintraub Schifferle (Carl Schifferle) and David Weintraub (Maria Guadalupe Hernandez Cota); cherished grandfather of Kayla Schifferle, Sarah Schifferle and Ricardo Weintraub Hernandez. Jon is also survived by many loving family members and friends.

Jon was dedicated to social justice, attending the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In 1965, he went to Alabama for the March from Selma to Montgomery. He married Beneva Brown in 1966. They spent two years in the Peace Corps working in Barbados, where their daughter Lisa was born. Three years later, their son David was born in Washington DC. They divorced in 1982.

Jon worked for the National Association of Counties (NACo) in Washington DC on manpower and workplace programs. He then served as Chief of Staff for Congressman Pat Williams, and subsequently as Staff Director of the House Education Committee's Labor Management Subcommittee where he helped write and get enacted the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). From 1995 until his retirement in 2002, he worked at the U.S. Department of Education on vocational and adult education issues. He proudly served as a member of the transition teams for Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, working on budget, education, and labor issues. In retirement, Jon enjoyed playing bridge, keeping up with his many friends, and was active in local affairs, including service as president of the condominium association, Chair of the Bethesda Urban Partnership, and co-chair of a local Democratic precinct.

Jon loved being a grandfather to his three grandchildren Kayla, Sarah, and Ricky. Jon was known to all as a caring, kind, and sweet man.

Jon was my first boss when I moved to DC in 1977 to work for him at NACo. We grew under Jon´s leadership into a team that folks both in DC and in counties around the country had a high regard for! Jon was not only our boss, and visionary, he was our dear friend, mentor, father figure and all around go to guy! Jon created a working environment that was business and family-we worked hard, played hard and we were always there for each other-we were family! Jon gave me the confidence to move forward in my career, and accomplish more professionally than I ever expected! Jon, we are so fortunate to have had you in our lives! God bless! Christine Ollis
