JORGE PULLES Obituary

Jorge Pulles
Died December 30, 2021 in Washington, DC. Born in Santiago, Cuba he arrived in New York City after completing two years of law school at the University of Havana. His father, a Judge in Oriente, provence sensing the impending revolution did not think Jorge could finish law school in Cuba. He arrived in New York in 1955 but could not adjust to New York winter and moved to Miami Beach, Florida. He was hired as a waiter at the Fontainebleau Hotel. Sadly, he did not go back to law school but it served him well later in his career. Always eager to learn and under the guidance of the European maitred, Jorge rose to that position.  In the early sixties during his tenure at the Fontainebleau he encouraged management to hire many Cuban refugees in varying positions throughout the hotel. Jorge continued his career in Washington, DC at the Washington Hilton Hotel where for 30 years he directed the banquet department until his retirement. He took great pride in training hundreds of workers including many immigrants from all over the world in all aspects of banquet service. These servers worked throughout the city's banquet venues. During his career he served every president from Kennedy through George W. Bush, many politicians, heads of state, royals, celebrities and entertainers including his favorite, Frank Sinatra.  In his retirement he continued his study of Japanese and Italian, and traveled to his favorite city, San Fransisco.  Jorge is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rebecca Krantz, three children, Margaret, John and James (Margaret) from his previous marriage and two grandchildren, John and Stephanie. He is also survived by his four remaining siblings, Carlos, Hector, Lourdes and Manuel, and predeceased by his sister, Sylvia.  Because of covid he will be buried in a private ceremony with a celebration of his life at a later date. In lieu of flowers please donate to SOME in Jorge's name, 71 O street NW, Washington, DC. 20001.

I loved being around Jorge when I worked at the Washington Hilton in the mid-eighties. He ran a first class banquet department. Always cool, smiling, dapper, and in command no matter what was going on.

Jorge, Rebecca and I traveled together on several occasions over the years. Aside from seeing them on their frequent trips to San Francisco and New York, we went on memorable road trips, including the Adirondacks, from DC to Ashville, Savannah, Charleston, the Outer Banks, toured the Southwest (Santa Fe, Canyon de Chelly, Sedona, Monument Valley), a two week road trip from Provence to Liguria and all over Tuscany, and the San Juan Islands, Seattle and down the Oregon Coast to Calistoga and SF. He was an easy and entertaining travel companion. I will cherish memories of our trips and am grateful I was able to visit them in November. Love you, miss you Jorge. RIP

Every year late January, early February we looked forward to visiting Jorge and Becky in San Francisco. We always had such a great time together as you will see in the pictures I've attached. The last time we were there was in February 2020, right before the pandemic. It was a blessing to be together with Johnny not knowing it would be the last time... "Missing you Papi."
