Joseph Gartlan Obituary
GARTLAN JOSEPH V. GARTLAN, JR. On Friday, July 18, 2008 in Alexandria, VA. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Fredona Manderfield Gartlan of Mason Neck, Virginia and his six children, Michael Gartlan of Fairfax, VA, Anne Gartlan-Steele of Yonkers, NY, Joan Gartlan of Washington, DC, Peter Gartlan of Alexandria, VA, Paul Gartlan of Coral Gables, FL and Joseph V. Gartlan, III of Maui, HI. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Patrick Gartlan of Fairfax, VA, Kendall Gartlan, Rachel Gartlan and Aubrey Gartlan of Alexandria, VA, Paul Gartlan and Caitlin Gartlan of Coral Gables, FL and Olivia Steele of Yonkers, NY. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151. A funeral Mass will he held on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA 22309. Burial will follow at Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 S. Kings Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to New Hope Housing, 8407-E Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22309 or United Community Ministries (UCM), 7511 Fordson Road, Alexandria, VA 22306.

My heart goes out to Mr. Gartlan's family at this time and in the days ahead. I was one of the nurses who cared for him several times on the joint replacement floor. I grew very fond of my "buddy Joe" and loved listening to all of his great stories, He would explain all the newspaper articles to me and always ask my thoughts on the article. He was such a family man and gave me much great advice on ways to raise my four children.. I would get after him when I learned he was back at hosp after dislocating hip from attending a meeting to soon or getting up into his jeep. I told him he needed to try to stay out of trouble, but he did what he wanted he was stuburn. I loved Joe for he tought me so many lessons on life which really helped me grow spirtualy. I will always remember his smiling face and big hugs. he was such a caring person with good faith and he touched many hearts.

Senator Gartlan was an inspiration to a generation of social activists. His deep commitment to care of the poor and disadvantaged, mentally ill, and victims of crime, in the face of indifference and opposition remains a model of leadership for generations to come.

first of all i would like to express the migliaccio s deepest sympathy that goes out to all the children of joe gartlan and specially joan mr gartlan was a long time friend of our family and will always remember all the x-mas cards that joe sent to us through the years we were always loyal politically whenever mr gartlan needed our vote when in office and he will be missed and always remembered by us thanks for all the good times joe may your soul rest in peace in heaven
