Our condolences to Joan and family. We greatly treasured Joe's friendship of 50 years. He was an outstanding renal physiologist who broke new ground with the molecular understanding of how vasopressins worked, along with many outstanding contributions to kidney knowledge. Above all he was a gentleman of the highest order who built strong friendships even across distances. His standards in science, culture and life were high, but he was always modest and caring. He was one of the best one meets in life.
With sympathy,
John and Fay Dirks

Joe was a diligent, curious and unrelenting seeker of truth and clarity in his scientific work. He was also a warm ,caring and devoted mentor to dozens of young investigators, myself included.
He will be missed.

Joan - Ric and I send our condolences. My parents were so fond of you and Joe and my mother was tickled by the part they played in helping bring you together. I appreciate the kindness the two of you showed to my parents during their last illnesses. We wish you strength as you mourn your loss. Judy Cooper Erdheim and Ric Erdheim

Joe was a true scholar and a gentle person. I wouldn't be in my present career without his encouragement. I feel fortunate to have been a trainee in the Division of Nephrology at Hopkins under his tenure. He will be missed but ever remembered for his many contributions to research as well as training the next generation of renal scientists. Joan, you have my sincerest sympathy as you mourn the loss of your husband and friend.
