Joseph Reader, a well-known spectroscopist employed at NIST for 61 years, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on December 1, 1934, Joseph lived a life filled with love, learning, and deep devotion to his family.
A graduate of Purdue University, Joseph earned his PhD in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1962. Over his distinguished career, he published numerous works in atomic physics and played a key role in the formulation of the Atomic Energy Levels projects, a vital resource accessed worldwide by scientists.
For 68 years, he was married to his longtime love, Evelyn, building a partnership rooted in mutual respect, humor, and unwavering support. Together, they raised three children—Jack Reader and wife Lauren Feldman Steinberg, Mike Reader and wife Betsy, and Cheryl Schechter and husband Bruce. They instilled in them the same integrity, curiosity, and kindness that defined Joseph's life.
In addition to his scientific career, Joseph and Evelyn ran a longtime business together, Opthos Instruments, demonstrating their shared dedication and partnership beyond family life.
Many fond memories were made in Bethany Beach, where Evelyn and Joseph built their cherished "R Place" beach house and spent many lovely weeks there, surrounded by family and friends.
Joseph's pride extended to his grandchildren—Laura Miller and husband Joey, Sarah Lackey and husband Parker, Nick Reader, Amanda Malakoff and husband Dan, and Brandon Schechter and wife Jessica—and his great-grandchildren Delilah, Liev, Kendall, and Dakota, each of whom brought him immense joy.
His professional life as a spectroscopist reflected his meticulous nature and passion for discovery, but it was his warmth, humor, and wisdom that left the deepest mark on those who knew him. Joseph's life was a testament to the beauty of steady love, intellectual curiosity, and quiet strength.
He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A graveside funeral will be held Sunday, August 9 at 3 p.m. at King David Memorial Gardens, family only. A memorial gathering will follow from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ingleside Club Room, 701 Ingleside Blvd, Rockville, MD.
