JOSEPH A. SPILOTRO

Passed away peacefully on October 29, 2020. Born on January 5,1929, he was the eldest of five children, a loving husband, a father of four, a brother, a dedicated grandfather, and a veteran.

Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army in Nov. 1950 and reported to Fort Leonard Wood for Basic Training. In May 1951 he landed in Korea where he served as an Army medic with the 5th Medical Company as part of the 5th Regimental Combat Team where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class [SGT(T)].

Joe's commendations include the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the United Nations medal.

Joe earned a degree in industrial engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and later an MBA from George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Joe settled in Arlington, VA. and worked for the U.S. Navy as an Industrial Engineer/Consultant of Specialized Tasks; eventually finishing his career in the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA 07) in Crystal City.

After retirement, he worked with veterans of the Korean War Memorial Board to help fundraise, plan, and dedicate the Korean Veteran War Memorial in Washington, DC.

Joe enjoyed the outdoors and he was devoted to his family and grandchildren.

Joseph was predeceased by his wife Ourania "Nitsa"; and is survived by his children: Michael Spilotro, Kathy Spilotro, JoAnne Dorris, Christine Keller and his brother, Michael Spilotro of Arlington Heights IL. Joe is also survived by his grandchildren: Matthew, Alexandra, Samuel, Rachel, Nicholas, Cassidy, and William.

Joseph will be interned at the columbarium with wife Nitsa, at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, April 29, 2022 after a memorial service at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel at 8:45 a.m.
