Joyce Dopkeen Obituary
JOYCE HARRIET DOPKEEN
Joyce Harriet Dopkeen, the first female staff photographer hired by the New York Times, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2023 in Rockville, MD, where she had moved 14 months earlier to be close to her family. She was born October 23,1942 in Worcester, MA and educated at the Howard School for Girls and Boston University. Dopkeen's photojournalism career began with an internship at the Montgomery County Sentinel (MD). From there, she moved to Boston to work as a "spare" photographer for the Boston Globe and as a stringer for the New York Times. In 1973, the Times hired her full time in New York, where she worked until her retirement in 2008. She is survived by her devoted sister and brother, Leslie Dopkeen (Lawrence Rosenblum) and Jonathan Dopkeen (Kathleen), four nieces and nephews, and four grand-nieces and -nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3 at 10 a.m. at Garden of Remembrance Chapel, 14321 Comus Rd., Clarksburg, MD 20871.
