Joyeeta Raysircar Obituary

Raysircar, Joyeeta looked like you and me–a daughter, sister, cousin, wife, mother, co-worker, neighbor–yet to us she was a queen. A baby-whisperer, crabcake fanatic, museum-devotee, passionate reader, animal-lover, and cat lady extraordinaire with a sparkling sense of humor–we called her our dearest Bambi, Moom, Didi, Dadabhai, Boudi, Boromashi/pishi, Mimi, and Miss Joy. She was a pioneer, who with her husband and little daughter, arrived in Massachusetts in 1972 and built home after home, cozy and welcoming, with a standing Saturday night dinner invitation and a kind word for all. Joyeeta was fiercely independent and deeply loyal to her communities. She worked as a credit loan officer for Bank of Boston in various locations, was the treasurer for SASI, her college alumni association, and delighted in long drives to visit her people wherever they might be. She died on October 24, 2025, in Frederick MD, where she lived for the last 25 years. She was 81.

Born on June 18, 1944, in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India, Joyeeta was the daughter of Lal Gopal Ghatak and Chhaya (Chakravarty) Ghatak. She grew up in Kolkata and went to La Martinière, Visva-Bharati University in Santineketan, and Jadavpur University. Then she met the love of her life, Partho Raysircar, on a coffee date with friends, at Magnolia's on Park Street, and never once looked back. From India to America to London, Bangkok, Montreal, Athens, Istanbul, Sydney, Singapore, she circled the world with her books, large handbag and shoe collection, music, and kitties; and called Kolkata, Boston, Huntsville, and Mumbai home.

She is the dear heart of her beloved husband, Partho; daughter, Pritha; sister, Anita Ranjitkar (Madhu); late brother, Ashok Choudhuri (Mallika); sister-in-law, Sreela Ferguson (Keith) and late sisters-in-law, Swati Chokalingam (Avu) and Gargi Roysircar Sodowski (Timir); cousins–Sushmita Roy, Saswati Bagchi, Supratik Ghatak, Manas Bhattacharya, Gautam Chakravarty, Mita Chakravarty, Gopa Chatterjee; nieces–Sohini, Moyna, Munia, Tiya, Mindy, Zinnia; nephews–Manik, Vijay, Hondo, Eustis; best, best friends–Sreela Chatterji (Partha), and Bansari Tagore (Prasun). We are all deeply grateful for the gentle and expert care she received at Frederick Health, Johns Hopkins, Kernan, and Therafit Rehab and from her many invested and kind caregivers over the last several years. We all miss her. And, we know she's just up ahead, around the corner, making things comfortable for herself and us, as only she could. Until we meet again we will take care to tell her stories and remember her generous, incandescent spirit–in every sunrise, sunset, and star.

A private memorial gathering will be held in the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St, Wellesley MA on Sunday, November 2, from 3 to 7 p.m. A private cremation will be held on Monday November 3, at Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge MA. Please, in lieu of flowers, donations in Joyeeta's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital [stjude.org] or your favorite animal shelter or neighborhood food pantry. Bambidi is an awe inspiring persona that one gets instantly attracted to. Her calm, composed , affectionate demeanor makes her attractive and unforgettable. Fondly remember the many conversations and interactions with her and her words of wisdom. She is genuine in her interest in you and very generous both in words and deeds. Her warm hospitality still remains fresh in my mind. Bambidi is all about her deep love for her family .
Would not like to say 'was', as although we miss her physical presence, she lives on in the hearts of her family immediate and extended and all those who have known her.
For Chumki and Parthada, praying to God to give them the strength to tide through this time.
Deepest condolences to her loving family and each of her loved ones.

Bambi has always been a special person to us. We have known her since 1972 when we first came to Boston. She was a wonderful friend and we will always remember her generosity and warmth. We especially remember when she and Partho visited us in our cottage in Machias, Maine. Eternal happiness!

A mentor, a partner in navigating life and work....Joyeeta was a safe space...always. Even in distance, it was never a question that her support as unconditional love was always present.

She was first to share a story although often presented as a "lesson"! Joyeeta always had advice to make the hard times easier and the good times more joyful. We are blessed to have had her touch our lives.

Will miss you Bambidi. Can't forget our phone conversations that were always filled with so much of warmth; you spoke of the family in Kolkata with such care and offered advice to me when I needed it, and it came straight from the heart. Your words carried the quiet strength and grace that held me at times of trials, like when ma or baba were sick and eventually passed away. I will feel lost without you. Rest in peace, my beautiful cousin.

I first met Joyeeta in 1972, she and I lived in the same town. I remember her as a person with beautiful taste. She was an artist at heart and her home displayed her artistic talent. She was lovable and spoke her mind freely. May she live in eternal peace in her final resting place.Om Shanti

When I was a kid, I used to excitedly wait for my dearest Boropishi's visit to Kolkata ( then Calcutta). And then she used to give me a tight warm hug and kiss. The sweet smell of her skin, the twinkle in her eye and that beautiful smile - that's how I remember boropishi. Loved to hear her call my name and lovingly she always called me Zin. From her I got an aunt's warm affection, unbiased love and a LOT of pampering. I grew up wearing Chanel and Swarovski, munching on American chocolates. We went shopping, eating out, and spending time together when she used to be in Kolkata . I had my exclusive time with her . The last time I got to meet her and spend such fantastic quality time with her was long back in 2007. Yet, I close my eyes and it feels like just yesterday.
I had always admired her spirit, her big heart that so generously gave so much love, her capability to manage it all and with so much style and grace. It's amazing how exemplary a woman she was. Yes, she is right here just around the corner smiling and still being there for all of us who she so dearly loved.
I will miss you so much my dearest Boropishi
