Katherine Mance Obituary
With a BA from Stonehill College, North Easton, MA, and an MA from West Virginia University, Kathy was an educator at heart. In both her personal and professional lives, she had immense compassion for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as for people experiencing hardship and was intent on providing educational opportunities for all. She valued people and believed everyone deserves dignity, respect and a chance for a good life. She served on the Board of Trustees of Stonehill College, lobbied for and personally supported her causes.
Her long career was diverse and multi-pronged encompassing teaching, lobbying and charitable works, among others. Her career with the National Retail Federation was diverse, but she left her mark as she brought her innovative approach to the NRF Foundation. Her commitment to her job and tenacity in taking a fledgling organization, and with minimal support, to establish customer service standards which won support from the US Department of Labor for the retail industry was almost legendary. Kathy has been viewed as a pioneer in her efforts to support the retail industry and retail careers. She believed that retail was not just a job, but an opportunity to learn skills that would transfer to other professions and be helpful throughout life. She retired in 2015.
Kathy is survived by her seven siblings and her very large and extended family who will always remember her generous and vivacious spirit.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle, 208 S. 4th Street, Oakland, MD.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kathy's name to the National Retail Federation Foundation, The Monocacy Foundation, and World Central Kitchen.
