KAY CHERNUSH Obituary

Kay Heringman Chernush (Age 77) Passed away on February 15, 2022, in Washington DC from complications of a stroke. A multi-talented traveller, photographer, cancer survivor, feminist and outspoken champion of the enslaved and the exploited, Kay radiated warmth and an irrepressible joie de vivre. Kay was born in New Orleans, LA, grew up in Los Angeles, CA, and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1966. With a Fulbright Fellowship, she spent a year teaching English inside the double walls of the Women's College of Aligarh Muslim University. In 1968, Kay married Akosh Chernush and lived in Spain and in Paris where Kay worked at the New York Times bureau. They were later divorced. Back in the US, Kay became a photographer and, over the next 43 years, rose to become a top, free-lance commercial and fine arts photographer. Kay's artwork is included in permanent US governmental and private collections. Her hallmark was "to make visible the poetry and drama in the mundane and banal". Her photography career took her all over the world for major magazines, Fortune 500 corporations, as well as for the US government and non-profits. Whether atop a 230-foot construction crane over Chicago or in the belly of a truck carrying Mars bars to Iraq, Kay let nothing prevent her from producing work of the highest quality. Kay met her second husband, NIH molecular biologist Lee Rosner, in 1988, and they have been together ever since. For the past five years, Kay and Lee have enjoyed living at The Westchester Cooperative apartments in Washington, DC. Kay found relaxation in cooking gourmet meals for friends, in playing the flute and in Nature, especially in birdwatching. In 2011, after an assignment for the US State Department to document human trafficking, Kay founded and became President of ArtWorks for Freedom, a non-profit organization. Through her compassionate lens, she showed that all forms of art can be used to fight modern slavery. In January 2022, she was honored by being selected for the "70 Over 70 Award" granted by HelpAge USA, recognising that "she dedicated herself to building awareness about human trafficking and modern-day slavery using art exhibits, performances, and films." Kay also published two remarkable books, The Us and The They: Prejudice and Empathy in America's Smallest County, and the courageous Self Examination where she turned the camera on her own body after experiencing breast cancer. Kay will be missed by her husband, Lee Rosner, her sisters, Anne Pehrisch and Sue Heringman, her stepson, Ari Rosner-Salazar, her nephews David Pehrisch and Lain Heringman, and her grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews, sisters-in-law and her global family. There will be a private service for family, and a memorial service will be held in March. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to ArtWorks for Freedom, founded 10 years ago by Kay. https://artworksforfreedom.org

Looking at a water colored photograph of Kay's hanging on a wall at home, today l wondered how she was doing in this new area of art.
So looking on line l was shocked!
Indeed Kay was unique, in many ways intangible, almost ethereal, and was limitless in ideas she would initiate, and then unlike many of us, complete.
I always enjoyed talking with her at "our visits" , thankfully at the time they were routine .
Recently l retaught my self grandmother's PYSANSK (art of blowing then painting designs on eggs, vanishing and using as ornaments. Since they are exchanged with friends and have been done mainly by Orthodox Eastern Europeans for over 500 years, they represent an art that as long as it is practiced, peace on earth will continue. That spirit is what I saw in Kay, now resting in eternal peace.

I just learned of Kay´s passing when I received a newsletter from Artworks for Freedom. I met Kay a few years ago after she heard about a new treatment court for child victims of Commercial Sex Trafficking of Children (CSEC), in DC´s Superior Court. Kay contacted me and offered to bring her Gold Door project to us. I have wonderful memories and photos of Kay with our entire team of probation officers, social workers, attorneys and CSEC survivors, as we lovingly turned her "reclaimed door" into a thing of beauty. Kay showed us how to prep the door after which she invited all of us to cover it with the gold pieces she brought along with her.
Kay was a beautiful and amazing woman who brought so much energy and passion to her giving nature. I have a video and pictures of Kay from that day, and am happy to share them with her family.
Sending my condolences and my gratitude for having crossed paths with such a remarkable person.

I am so sad to learn of Kay´s passing. We met many years ago while working on photo shoots together. We became friends, and my husband and I shared happy meals with her and Lee in their home. Kay was a frequent guest at my Women´s´ Brunches, but the pandemic put an end to those and I hadn´t seen her for the past year. I miss her ready wit and her informed insights. May she rest in peace.

I will never forget the memories. They will always stay deep in my heart. I will only need to look inside my heart to feel close to you and to make you feel that you will be missed more than you can ever imagine. Thank you for using art to help end human trafficking. RIP Kay

I was only lucky enough to meet Kay once but that meeting was not only inspiring and fun, but she connected me with people who shared our common goal to end modern slavery. Kay was a force for good in this world and her voice for change will live on in the images she captured.

I share in mourning the loss of a wonderful family member and friend. She was my partner over many years in mothering Ari and being a grandmother to Ariana and Dominic. She was a wise woman who will be sorely missed.

So sorry to hear the sad news of Kay's passing. We met and became friends when we tried to bring Art Works for Freedom to Bristol UK. Her passion for both art and survivors of human trafficking was obvious and it is a shame we never managed to pull off the exhibition. My thought and prayers are with the family.
