Kenneth Crosby Obituary

CROSBY Kenneth E. Crosby, Jr. Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth E. Crosby, Jr., USMC (Retired), was tragically taken from his current duty assignment on March 18, 2021. He was 61 years old although he would have emphatically told you that most of those were dog years. He leaves behind his lovely and vivacious wife Shari Crosby; daughter Lauren Nicole Koontz (Ryan Koontz); mother Joann Crosby; sister Kim Day (Don Scovill); brother and co-conspirator Joe Crosby; and the newest member of the clan, his pride and joy, grandson Ethan Crosby Koontz. Ken was also especially fond of the family's golden retriever Liberty, although he was extremely critical of her hunting skills. Ken attended Bellevue Senior High School in Bellevue, Nebraska and while a modest student he was an exceptional athlete lettering in football and baseball and received many scholarship offers his senior year. He attended the University of South Florida and played baseball for Hall of Famer Robin Roberts. Ken graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences. He would later receive a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Troy State University. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1981 via the Officer Candidates Course with an aviation contract. Following his commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant, he attended The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico and subsequently attended flight school in Florida, earning his wings as a Naval Aviator in 1983. Designated an AH-1 "Cobra" helicopter pilot, his initial squadron was the North Carolina based HMLA-269, "Gunrunners," and in the exceptionally clever tradition for which Marines are known was given the call-sign "Bing." Before retiring from the Marine Corps, Lieutenant Colonel Crosby had the reputation and credentials of an excellent pilot to include a tour at flight school where he allowed fledgling aviators to scare the dickens out of him on a regular basis. He had boots on the ground in Operation Desert Storm as a member of an Air-Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) and was recognized with a Bronze Star medal for his performance during that conflict. Ken an area resident for over 20 years, witnessed the plane hitting the pentagon on 9-11 from the parking lot and immediately offered help, providing rides home to those stranded by the tragedy. His last assignment was as the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Air Facility at Quantico where he was responsible for providing Presidential helicopter support to HMX-1. Ken was widely known as an outstanding officer and summed up his career by saying that he did not always love the Corps but he always loved his Marines. Those men and women that worked for and with him over his 24+ years in uniform would say that he was smart, hard-working, and an exceptional leader. Following retirement from his beloved "Leatherneck Gun Club," Ken found himself back at the Pentagon working on the Joint Chief's of Staff as a senior Government Service (GS) analyst. It was this second career and his daily interaction with senior Air Force, Army, and Navy officers that prompted him to develop an affinity for brown liquors and good cigars which he referred to as being "strictly medicinal" in nature. Ken took unique pleasure in the game of golf despite being known among his golf buddies as "Shankapotamus." Rarely was the weather so bad that he could not get out for a round even though it often had his astute wife referring to his associates as the "biggest idiots she knew." His hole in one on the 13th hole at Forest Greens on September 5, 2011 was perhaps his finest moment as a golfer and more than made up for the three triple bogies he suffered that day. Ken Crosby is considered by a community, a neighborhood, and a diverse cadre of individuals who were blessed to know him as a friend. He was fiercely loyal, honest, humorous, dependable, and a man of faith. He will also be remembered as someone who absolutely adored his wife, Shari and his daughter, Lauren. Until the birth of his grandson Ethan last year, they were the single greatest source of joy and inspiration in his life. He will be missed. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA 22193. A Life Celebration service will begin at 11 a.m., Monday, March 29, 2021 at Mount Ararat Baptist Church, 1112 Garrisonville Rd., Stafford, VA 22556. Inurnment to follow at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, tributes to a life well lived can be made in Ken's name to causes that he and Shari supported and believe in, including; The Make a Wish Foundation (wish.org), the American Red Cross (redcross.org), or Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org). www.mountcastle.netwww.mountcastle.net

None of us who lived through 9/11 in the Washington, D.C. area will ever forget it. Ken was a witness. From the old Navy Annex parking lot he saw the plane hit the Pentagon. He came to our Honor Flight tour guide group and told his story. As painful as it was at times to listen to it, it must have been harder still for him to tell it. But he did. The session was recorded, too, and it will be watched years into the future. My condolences on his passing. My thanks for his service, both during his active-duty career, and then his service in retirement to the historical record, preserving the record of that terrible day.

Years ago we used to all get together as big, extended, family gatherings at Mom & Dad's house outside Inglis, Florida. We did all the fun stuff, springs, canoes, boats, yard games, board games, shooting, 8-ball on the pool table, grill outs - you name it, we did it. Always there was Kenneth leading the way, helping out, participating in each and every activity. Kenneth never missed an opportunity to have fun, nor did he miss an opportunity to dupe one of us into doing something silly, and then laugh with all of us when we did it. His wit and humor was only surpassed by his dedication to family and country. He always had a fierce devotion to family and everything that family encompasses. Kenneth will be missed, very much so, by many, many people. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were touched by him. Now he waits with all those loved ones who have gone before him. He waits with hand extended, reaching for us, to help us up. Not just because he can, but because he knows we need it.

To Mrs. Crosby and family,
I met Ken throw a mutual friend who puts together Zoom meetings, I was part of a 4 person panel being interview by the host of the zoom. there were 2 ladies and 2 males, Ken and I were the males and all 4 of us spoke about being at the Pentagon on 9-11 from our perspective. I was Proud to be part of that panel hear what everyone contributed. Ken was one of those guys after talking to or with him you felt you knew him for ever, well maybe because we shared a few things in common. We are Marines and both served in the Gulf War and later on, both worked at the Pentagon. I have to say I truly felt our paths crossed prior to the Zoom meeting but I know I was proud to be considered his friend.
I can not begin to express my deep sorrow for your loss, please know you have family and friends to help you through these challenging times, please stay strong and keep your faith as Ken is in good hands now. God Bless You All and May Ken RIP Semper Fi Sir Thank you for your service.

Bing was my boss for two years and my friend for 20. He got me a medal I probably didn't deserve because he was a superior leader, I was one of his people, and he always did everything that could be done for his own. I will always be proud that he considered me one of his. His family has all my sympathies in their loss. He was a superior man and a hell of a Marine.

Dear Shari, Lauren, Ryan, Ethan, and All of "Bing's" Family and Dear Friends,

What a truly beautiful, heart-warming, inspirational tribute you have offered up to honor his memory... Although I never had the pleasure of making his acquaintance, after reading your artfully penned homage, I believe I cannot only feel what a genuinely kind and special man he clearly was to each of you, but also sense how there were so many others whose lives he left an indelible positive impact on along his journey of life.

My heart goes out to each and everyone of you as you may find yourself going through the next several days, weeks, months, and even years trying to wrap your heads and hearts around why such a good, loving, fun, incredibly gifted and giving man was taken so tragically from this life at such a young age! What a true blessing he was not only to meet his beloved grandson, Ethan, but that he was able to love on him and witness some of his many firsts in Ethan's precious life! I have faith that Bing will live on each of you and Ethan will always know just how adored and adoring his grandpa was!

As we are keenly aware... each of us experiences grief and loss quite individually... please try to remember to gift yourself and others with grace, patience, and kindness. Having lost my own father in 2017, I feel as though I have finally, just recently, been able to strike the balance between grieving, and at times, crying inconsolably with such despair and sadness at not being able to just pick up the phone and hear his reassuring voice and laughter with the other spectrum of smiling and giggling as I reminisce about something he might have said or has said/done (solo or with other family and friends who also were blessed to know him) and then, finding comfort and being at peace that he is where he is meant to be, as I believe we each are... in this very moment in time. Though, admittedly, that last part seems to be easier to swallow with each passing day...

I have already asked my Dad to make a point of greeting Bing with a nice double pour of Jack Daniels 'Eric Church' Single Barrel Select Whiskey as Bing assumes his rightful place and heavenly role as your guardian angel... and I do believe you will feel his (Bing's) presence whenever you need him the most (and even just whimsically... because it sounds like that is the kind of soul he has)!

I wish each of you strength, peace, and enriched faith as you grieve this huge loss of your husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, etc.

With huge hugs and deepest compassion and condolences,

Jennifer Purcell
