KEVIN GREGORY LONG
Kevin Gregory Long, who had struggled with multiple illnesses for many years, died at home in Arlington, Virginia on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. He was born August 2, 1955 the only son of James and Esther Long. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Martha Schaeffer Long; his mother-in-law, Jane D. Schaeffer; sisters-in-law, Anne Forsyth, Mary Richard (Fred), Joan Waxtein and Laura Langley (Mike); as well as 22 nieces and nephews, Jane and Michael Forsyth, John (Hannah), Carmel, Jeannette, Robert, Thomas, Dominic and Paul Richard, Bernardo, Gabrielle and Joseph Waxtein and David, Aaron, Clare, Margaret, Kathleen, Gianna, Emma, Laura, Marie and Celine Langley. He was preceded in death by his devoted brother-in-law, George Forsyth, his beloved father-in-law, John E. Schaeffer and his mother, Esther Long.The Visitation and Rosary will be at Murphy Funeral Home in Arlington from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, August 24, 2014.A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 25, 2014, followed by burial at Columbia Gardens in Arlington.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Thomas Aquinas College, 10000 North Ojai Road, Santa Paula, CA 93060.

Martha, please know that Katherine and I are praying for you and Kevin. He was one of the most decisive influences in my life -- a mentor and friend, without whom I would not have entered the Catholic Church. I shall ever recall with sweetness my visits with you two at the Adobe de Palomares, where there was ever good conversation, good food, and good drink. Kevin has had a deep influence for the good on many -- and Our Lord, who is merciful and just, will not, I believe, forget this.

We are always grateful for the many occasions that Kevin (and you) helped us before and after our marriage, through his many many selfless gestures, like assisting Nuria to become a permanent U.S. resident and tutoring her in English. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies and prayers. I will always remember Kevin for his piercing intellect and delightful sense of humor.
