Mrs. Merkel was a very special person. I was in her English class and she and her husband moved into our neighborhood about the time she had her second child. As my English teacher she did something very special for me. I had struggled with grammar because I came in from another school and had a very poor grasp of basic grammar. For the final exam, she knew I was so worried about passing that she told me to wait out in the hall while she quickly graded my exam. Within minutes she came out and told me I passed and to have a great weekend! I have told that story so many times because it meant the world to me!

What a great teacher, and a wonderful grammarian! May she rest in peace.
