Lois Smith Sieger, 84, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, from Alzheimer's disease after battling Multiple Sclerosis for four decades. Lois was born on October 18, 1940, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to Harold and Margaret Smith. She graduated from Greater Johnstown High School in 1958, where she was a member of Future Teachers of America. She majored in Elementary and Kindergarten Education at Penn State University, graduating in 1962.
Lois met the love of her life, Christopher Charles Sieger, while both were working as counselors at Snow Hill Camp in Lake Como, Pennsylvania in 1962. They married on July 10, 1965 and celebrated 56 years together before Chris passed away in 2019. After marrying, the couple moved to Middletown, Connecticut, where Lois taught at Wilbert Snow Elementary School. They had their first daughter, Susan Elaine, on February 14, 1967, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and later that year moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, where they had their second daughter, Stephanie Christen, on May 3, 1970. In 1973, Lois and Chris moved their young family to Olney, Maryland, where they remained.
Lois set aside her passion for teaching to raise her daughters but returned to substitute teaching in 1979. After long-term substitute positions within Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools, Lois began a 26-year career at William Tyler Page Elementary School in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she was a beloved teacher until her retirement in 2006. Although she would have chosen to continue teaching forever if not for the challenges posed by Multiple Sclerosis, retirement allowed Lois more time to travel extensively with Chris, and to watch her five grandchildren, Kameron (25), Kathryn (25), Colin (24), George (22) and Riley (22) grow up.
Lois will be interred beside her husband at Christ Lutheran Church in Baltimore in a private family service. A memorial service will follow in 2025. Memorial contributions may be made to the
Alzheimer's Association or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in honor of Lois Smith Sieger.
