LOUISE GRIFFIN Obituary

GRIFFIN Louise G. Griffin (Age 102) Louise G. Griffin, a lifelong resident of Washington, DC, passed away on November 30, 2021 after a brief illness. She was born on December 18, 1919. She grew up in southwest Washington where she attended the former Enoch Ambush Elementary School. She continued her education at Shaw Jr. High School, and then Dunbar High School. After high school, she worked for the federal government for twelve years at the old Army finance center at Buzzard Point. In 1953 she graduated from Howard University, Magna Cum Laude, with a B.S. in Education, and then earned her Master's Degree in Education. While at Howard, she joined the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her first teaching assignment was at the John Phillip Sousa Jr. High School in southeast Washington. Louise taught there for over fifteen years and ended her career as an assistant principal at Lincoln Jr. High School. After retirement she took courses in cake decorating and baked delicious cakes for family and friends. She then pursued courses in calligraphy, and joined the local Calligraphy Guild. When the White House sought calligraphy volunteers to address correspondence, Louise decided to give that a try, and 26 years later at the age of 100, she was still volunteering. The driving force of her life has been her enduring faith in God. She was eternally grateful for the many blessings bestowed upon her. She was an active member of the Michigan Park Christian Church, where she volunteered to play the organ for the church for 23 years. She also served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, and worked with youth groups. She later changed membership to the University Christian Church in Hyattsville, MD. Ever the beloved matriarch, Louise was always available to help her children and grandchildren, and instilled in them Christian values. She is survived by her children, Valeria (Harold) Slaughter, Brian Griffin, Ronald (Margaret) Griffin; grandchildren, Eric Burns, Chandria Slaughter (Kurt) Lindblom, Harolyn Slaughter, Anthony (Chihiro Hasegawa) Griffin; great-grandson Harold Slaughter; sister Helen Slaughter, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Alphonso Griffin, parents Joseph and Mary Gantt, siblings Joseph and Thomas Gantt, Aline Skinner, half-sister Violet Freeman, grandson James Griffin, and special friend Gilbert Diggs. Prior to her passing Louise expressed her sincere appreciation of and love for her many friends from the White House volunteer group, members of her church, and the many other friends and family members that she encountered on her journey through life. Louise requested that there be no memorial service and asked that donations be made to the general fund of the University Christian Church at 6800 Adelphi Rd., Hyattsville, MD 20782.

I volunteered on the Comments Line with Louise for several years & we've kept in touch via Christmas cards for decades. Not receiving a card this past holiday was a noted absence for me, which is why I searched online to see if there was any news about her. I will always remember her fondly. What I think about when I think of Louise: her kindness and her beautiful smile. My sincerest condolences to her family.

To The Family,
Sincere condolences to you upon the loss of your mother. I met her through my cousin, Gilbert Diggs. They were very dear friends. Your Mother kept the memorial going in the Washington Post for Gil and would remember him on special days. I really appreciated her for that and it was a reminder for me to remember him as well.
I hope the many precious memories you have of your Mother will sustain you now and always.
Peace & Many Blessings,
Jacquelyn Simmons

Lou was a pilar in my life-a constant source of love, positivity, and support throughout my 42 years of existence. She lived a full, inspiring life that any of us would be fortunate to have. Although she is no longer with us, her life and deeds live on and inspire the generations that follow.

I didn't know Mrs. Griffin, but I read her obituary. What a wonderful soul God gave to so many people. Heaven must be happy to have her back. God bless all those she left behind.

Dearest Louise,
We celebrate your incredible life and legacy of faithfulness, as you gave your life away to love and serve others to the glory of God, your Saviour. "This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:12-13. May you now enjoy eternal life with your loved ones who have gone before you. We can't wait to see you again in heaven. I'm sure you will be playing the organ, worshipping the Lord, and surrounded by all of the blessed lives that you touched here on earth. Thank you for your sacrifice of love for your family, the children and young adults in school and church, and the many hours you volunteered to make things special for others wherever you went. Rest in Peace, dear friend, until we meet again. Love & Hugs, Brent & Charda Lively & Family (friends of Ron & Margaret Griffin).
