Luette Goodbody Semmes

Luette "Lutie" Goodbody Semmes died peacefully at the age of 96 on November 17, 2023 in Adamstown, MD. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 13, 1927. She attended Vassar College in 1944 and after graduation married Harry Semmes moving to Washington, DC then to the Semmes estate in Potomac, MD.

Lutie had a lifelong commitment of service to others. She helped found the Saint Francis Episcopal Church in Potomac, the Maryland Head Start program, and the Garden Club of Potomac. She was an avid horse-rider and birdwatcher. In 1975 she relaunched the Potomac Almanac, turning it into an acclaimed bi-weekly newspaper with 13 employees.

She is survived by her four children: Harry (Turko), Guy, Thomas and Luette; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Services will be held at Saint Francis Church on December 9, 2023 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland at habitatmm.org.

To Guy, and the rest of the Semmes family, I am sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. One of the last (if not the last) of the members of Potomac's Greatest Generation. If I am not mistaken, she drove a station wagon back in the day as many of the mom's did to transport their children to various events, including horseback riding. That is where I most remember her from. I do not remember if it was horse shows or pony club, but it seems that of the few of those events I attended she was usually there with some of her children, if not all of them.
Best to all.
