Maarja Krusten Obituary

Maarja Krusten (74), died February 25, 2025. Beloved daughter of Peter and Edla Krusten, twin sister of Eva, all of whom predeceased her. Growing up in New York City and Washington, DC, Maarja earned her Master's degree in history at George Washington University. She worked as an archivist with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), 1976-1990, and as an agency historian with the U.S. Government Accountability Office, 1990-2016. Following retirement she continued to serve with NARA as a volunteer, and also maintained a blog relating to archival topics, particularly presidential materials. Throughout her professional career, Maarja earned recognition as a tireless and valued advocate of NARA and archival issues.

A remembrance program will be held at Hope Lutheran Church and Student Center, 4201 Guilford Drive, College Park, MD 20740, on Saturday, March 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the National Archives Foundation or the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Maarja was a faithful volunteer for school programs and special events at the National Archives. The education and public programs teams deeply appreciated her support and assistance. We enjoyed seeing her photos of the white squirrels she fed and protected and hearing about her work with the National Archives. We miss her.
