COLBERT MANUEL M. COLBERT On Tuesday, October 9, 2014, Manuel "Manny" Colbert, aged 99, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away following a stroke. Manuel Colbert was born on July 12, 1915 in Rochester, New York. He grew up in Rochester, and attended college, and began his first career as a violinist and music teacher. Later, he attended law school, and was inducted into active service in the military during WW2. He served 40 years in the United States Air Force, both in uniform (rank of Major) and as a civilian, most of this with USAFE, 3rd Air Force in England. Present at the Liberation of Paris, France, he stayed and wrote for the Information and Education Division. In England, he worked as head of Personnel Services, which included opening of military schools in Europe, starting adult education programs and organizing recreation activities for the bases. He retired from the military in 1976 and worked as the Manager of Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, VA until 1988. From 1988 to1991, he worked for the Pentagon. From 1991 until the present, he was a tireless volunteer for Fairfax County Courthouse and Court Services, as well as the Northern Virginia Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center. This past Tuesday, he was volunteering as usual at the Fairfax Courthouse when he suffered a major stroke. Manny especially loved classical music, dining out, the theatre, WW2 history and he had an inherent sensitivity for any sort of prejudice or discrimination towards others. He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy Evelyne Colbert (nee Harris), as well as his parents Fanny and Hyman Silverman. He is survived by daughters Kay Colbert and Carole Whelan; grandchildren Michael and Andrew Barroso, Kit and Conor Whelan; and sons-in-law Carlos Barroso and Ronald Whelan. He is also survived by brother Walter Silverman, sister-in-law Norma Silverman, niece Donna Silverman and nephew Stuart Silverman. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. Everywhere he went, some stranger would approach and thank "Mr. Manny" for helping him in some way. A memorial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined, with a reception for friends and family following at Belle Haven Country Club.
