Marc Collett Obituary
MARC STEPHEN COLLETT (Age 71)
Marc S. Collett of Washington, DC, died June 11, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. He was a renowned expert in the study of viruses and an entrepreneur in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries. Marc received his BS and PhD. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado, Denver. After directing research at several companies, he was president and founder of ViroDefense Inc., which aims to develop antiviral drugs to address global health threats. Over his long career, he was a mentor and friend to many young scientists.
Marc easily developed and maintained numerous business and personal friendships and enjoyed travel, especially if it involved beaches, boats, and water. He was a long-time model train enthusiast and later in life took up kayaking on the Potomac River. Despite a long battle with Parkinson's, Marc always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes, ready to listen to your stories or tell some of his own adventures.
He is survived by his wife, Leslie Roberts, his stepson, Nathan Friedman, brothers, Robert Collett and Michael Dierkes, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dr. Marc Collett Endowed Fellowship for Discovery Fund at the University of Michigan. Checks should be made to University of Michigan and sent to the Michigan Medicine Office of Development, 777 E Eisenhower Pkwy, Ste 650, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. To Marc's friends and colleagues everywhere, an effort is underway to create a 'compendium' of tributes to Marc's excellence as a scientist and sheer radiance as a friend. What a beautiful memorial for Marc. I always adored him. So smart, so handsome, such a warm welcoming demeanor. We miss you so much already.
