Marian Newman

Marian Newman, born in Rochester, NY, was a gentle and compassionate soul with a resolute sense of justice and a lifelong commitment to helping those in need. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Michael A. Newman; her daughters, Sarah Newman (David Gorodetski) and Rachel Newman Glick (Adir Glick); her beloved grandchildren, Shalva and Adiv Glick; her brother, Louis Gitlin (Edie Gitlin); and her sister, Eleanor Lange (Christopher Lange). Marian was the cherished daughter of Manuel and Anne Gitlin (née Shulman).

A "red diaper baby," Marian was raised in a family deeply dedicated to social justice. During her childhood in Rochester, her family hosted political activism gatherings, shaping her strong convictions. Her love of theater blossomed at Michigan State University, where she was a star performer. She went on to study acting with David LeGrant in New York City, channeling her talents into a lifelong flair for advocacy and public speaking.

In 1968, Marian married Michael Newman. Their extended honeymoon was a true adventure as Michael had a medical fellowship that carried them around the world on a Pan Am Flight 1 ticket.

Marian's passion for wildlife conservation defined much of her career. She worked tirelessly to protect endangered species, traveling globally to advocate for animals like kangaroos, elephants, seals, and whales. In the early 1970s, her efforts to safeguard kangaroo populations earned her the nickname "The Kangaroo Lady" in Australia, where she faced criticism and praise. Marian's advocacy led to two kangaroo species being added to the endangered species list. She continued her impactful work through roles with Christine Stevens and Cleveland Amory, the Animal Welfare Institute, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the International Wildlife Coalition, lobbying for legislation that safeguarded countless species worldwide. Finally, in 2023, Marian's effort led major brands like Puma, Nike, and New Balance to discontinue using kangaroo skin in their athletic shoes.

Marian's activism extended beyond wildlife conservation. She was a vocal advocate for women's rights, environmental protection, and social justice. Fearless and eloquent, she often surprised politicians she encountered in public places, using her charm and directness to make her points with unforgettable clarity.

In her later years, Marian dedicated herself to tutoring children with reading disabilities in the Washington, DC area. She cherished time with her grandchildren in Chicago, IL and remained active in tennis, yoga, and travel until just weeks before her unexpected passing from amyloid angiopathy.

Marian Newman was a beacon of kindness, courage, and conviction. Her legacy of compassion and advocacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
