Marion Guggenheim Obituary

Marion Streett Guggenheim died peacefully in the comfort of her home in Washington, DC on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the age of 93. She was born in St Louis, MO on March 6, 1931. Her mother was Anne Vietor Davis and her father James Douglas Streett II. Her great grandfathers were John Lionberger Davis and James Douglas Streett and her great grandfather was Rolla Wells, former Mayor of St Louis from 1901-1909.

She graduated from John Burroughs High School in St Louis and from Connecticut College for Women. She was working at the St Louis Art Museum while pursuing a master's degree in Asian Art, when she met and then married filmmaker Charles Eli Guggenheim from Cincinnati, Ohio. They raised three children in University City, Missouri, Grace Stix Guggenheim, Jonathan Streett Guggenheim, and Davis Guggenheim. In 1966 they moved to Washington, DC due to Charles's career focus in telling stories about the American experience and political biographies for campaigns. After 45 years of marriage Charles passed away, and in 2013, Marion married the Hon. Harry Thayer, a former member of the State Department and Ambassador to Singapore.

Marion was one of several Founders for DC Action for Children, an advocacy organization working to promote early childhood education, and she also served on the board of the Environmental Film Festival of our Nation's Capitol. She was an active contributor to those working in progressive democratic politics, and strongly believed in creating a more compassionate society. Art, classical music, opera, and reading the hard print newspaper editions were her daily passions. When grandchildren arrived, their daily exploits became a source of great joy.

Marion was selfless and devoted to her family, creating a welcoming and beautiful home for the heart of family life. She was known for her kindness, warmth, and consistent use of the word "wonderful," a word that reflected the light and love she transmitted to others and that emanated from within. She is survived by her three children, their spouses, and five grandchildren.

Services private. Contributions can be made to the Legacy Endowment Fund for the Environmental Film Festival in our Nation's Capital.
