Retired Brigadier General Marion Mann, MD, PhD, former Dean of the Howard University College of Medicine, passed away at his home in Washington, DC on August 20, 2022. He was 102 years of age. He received his final promotion to Brigadier General in 1975.

Marion Mann, MD was graduated as president of his class and with honors from Howard University College of Medicine in 1954. He earned at PhD from Georgetown University and was awarded two honorary doctorates from Georgetown (1979) and from the University of Massachusetts in 1984.

Dr. Mann was an assistant professor and then associate professor while serving for five years (1962-1967) as Deputy Medical Examiner in the Coroner's Office of the District of Columbia. In 1970, Mann was promoted to full professor and was selected to be the 12th Dean of Howard University's College of Medicine.

As Dean, his accomplishments include the completion of funding for the Seeley G Mudd building. He retired as Dean in 1980, but returned to the University in 1988 in the position of University Associate Vice President for Research.

I remember very thankfully the support that Dr. Mann provided me through the Office of Research Programs. In 1988-92, whenever, I wrote a proposal, Dr. Mann's office gave me their full support. if I needed a letter of support from the president , I just provided the abstract of my proposal, and the next day I would have a signed letter. He was committed to excellence and knew very well what kind of services that an Office for Research should provide.
Dr. Mann was a giant amongst men and yet he was very nurturing and supportive. He will surely be missed and it is with great sorrow that I offer this message.
