Mark Epstein Obituary

EPSTEIN MARK SANFORD EPSTEIN April 2, 1957 - April 8, 2018 Proud father, passionate environmentalist and ever-curious world traveler Mark Sanford Epstein, died on April 8, 2018 from cancer. Mark is survived by his children, Alexandra, age 23, a consultant at Booz Allen and Dashell, age 19, a freshman at Occidental College and scratch golfer. Mark devoted his professional career to environmental and social causes after obtaining a JD degree from New York University Law School and graduating Phi Beta Kappa from The University of Pennsylvania. Mark fought to save the rainforest, coral reefs, penguins and the world's oceans. He served in executive roles, including the role of founder and on the board of directors at many environmental groups, including The Coral Reef Alliance, The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), Oceanites, American Rivers, Physicians for Social Responsibility, the Environmental Defense Fund, The Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital, the Oregon Natural Resources Council and the Tahirih Justice Center. In 1990, Mark was a candidate for U.S. Congress in the 5th Congressional District, Nassau County, Long Island, New York, where he grew up. Mark was deeply inspired by Representative Allard K. Lowenstein, who held the office during Mark's formative years. While passionate about all his work on behalf of the environment, Mark above all cherished Ali and Dash, his family and the many, many friends he made and kept from elementary school to law school, his poker group and weekly basketball game, his neighborhood, and the schools, synagogues, teams and activities his children attended or participated in. Mark was also a certified dive master, a barbeque aficionado, and loved music from the 1960s, "70s and "80s. In addition his children, Mark is survived by his mother, Elissa Epstein of New York City, his sisters, Jill Steele of Aspen, Colorado, Debra Epstein of Los Angeles, and nephews, Cliff and Luke White, and Hunter and Griffin Owens. There was never a minute in the day that Mark did not think about Ali and Dash. He was enormously proud of them at every step of life and was a deeply engaged and attentive father. A Celebration of Mark's life will be held at a later date. Contributions in Mark's memory may be directed to The Atlantic and Southern Oceans Coalition (ASOC), Oceanites or the environmental charity of your choice. Mark Epstein was one of the finest human beings I have been blessed to call friend'. When I think of Mark, the first thing that comes to mind was what a great Father he was He loved, talked about, devoted himself, to his daughter Ali and son Dash. I cannot think of a man who was a finer example of what it means to be a good father. Mark was also one of most giving, supportive friends I have ever known. Generous, helpful, fun, funny, interesting, entertaining, inspiring responsible, committed, there are not enough descriptive words of what it means to be a great man, a trusted colleague, a true friend to give justice to Mark Epstein. He made us all strive to be better, in every way a human being can be and for all his many accomplishments, he was still humble and gracious for those who really knew him. He was an adult, a grown-up who put responsibility and the needs of others ahead of his own, yet, he was a pleasure to be around. Not only are we' human beings all better as people for having had Mark Epstein in our lives but so too is the earth and the natural world he more than did his part to care for. He will be missed but he will be remembered. My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers for Ali, Dash, his dear mother and family.

I've never known a bigger-hearted person. He was passionate about many things (tennis, basketball, music, the environment, friendship, etc.) He loved his family and adored Aly and Dash and could not have been a prouder Dad. I know he will continue to inspire them. I miss my friend and I know others will as well.

Rest in peace Mark. I spent my childhood knowing you for many years and I'm proud of you because you lived an exemplary life and there clearly aren't enough people like you out there. To all of Mark's closest friends, many of whom are friends of mine, I grieve with you although my memories of Mark are from school days. Mark was a nice and good person then, and I'm certainly not surprised that he did so much with his life. Its very sad but I'm so happy that Mark touched so many.

Childhood friends are some of the best friends, as they keep us young at heart. You, Mark Epstein, will remain young in our hearts. The world is a better place for you having been a part of it, even if it wasn't for enough years.
