MARK LIVELY Obituary

LIVELY MARK BEIRNE LIVELY Of Gaithersburg, Maryland entered Heaven on March 4, 2016. He was born in Ashland, KY on February 4, 1948 to the late Max and Helen (Prill) Lively. Mark was the beloved husband of Tracy Gross (Lugo) Lively and loving father to Mark Jr. (Ida) of Port Matilda, PA; Peter (Audrey) of Boston, MA; and Melanie (Roger) Bartholomay of Knoxville, TN and doting grandfather to Paul Shan, Veronica, Heidi and Rex Bartholomay. He was married for 30 years to the late Vicki (Beavers) Lively. He is survived by brother Frank (Mary) and sister Linda (Tom) Hankins and nieces, nephews and cousins. Mark and his wife Vicki were dedicated and beloved leaders at Messiah Lutheran Church in Germantown, MD and later at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Rockville, MD. Ever faithful, Mark brought his warm smile and big laugh to as many activities as he could. Best known for welcoming guests and giving hugs, he especially loved encouraging children and young people, and at the time of his death was serving as congregation president. He was active in the Vineyard fellowship of Via de Cristo. Following his marriage to Tracy in 2004, he was also embraced by and enjoyed serving at St. James'' Episcopal Church in Potomac, MD. He earned an SB in Electrical Engineering from MIT and an SM in Management from MIT''s Sloan School. He began his career with American Electric Power and later joined the Washington Utility Group of Ernst and Young. As a self-employed utility economic engineer since 1992, Mark designed financial models that dealt with electricity and natural gas, primarily pricing models. From 1996-1999 on behalf of the D.C. Office of People''s Counsel he prepared comments on the proposed merger between PEPCO and BG&E; his adjustments to the proposed savings were the only ones accepted by the D.C. Public Service Commission and had a direct impact on the outcome of the case. He had assignments throughout the world on behalf of the World Bank and other clients. His articles appeared in Public Utilities Fortnightly and publications of the National Regulatory Research Institute, the U.S. Association of Energy Economics and the IEEE. He served the MIT Club of Washington for several terms as treasurer and vice-president between 1988-2000. Most recently, he was an officer of the National Capital Area Chapter of the U.S. Association of Energy Economics, completing a term as president in 2014. A memorial service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Cross on March 12, 2016 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcome to the children''s book program at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 12801 Falls Rd, Rockville, MD 20854.A memorial service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Cross on March 12, 2016 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be welcome to the children''s book program at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 12801 Falls Rd, Rockville, MD 20854.

Mark Lively was a member of the Class of 1969 at MIT and a member of the MIT Concert Band, where I knew him. I attended Marks memorial service last year. Mark was a wonderful, kind man and a terrific musician. He should have lived a longer life because he made the world a better place every day he lived in it. I am so sorry that he will miss the 50th reunion of our class this year, but he will be remembered.
