Martha Alexander Obituary

Martha Sue Alexander of Gambrills, Maryland, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, at age 79 in hospice care, after suffering a series of health issues in the weeks preceding her death.

Martha grew up in Hyattsville, Maryland, and was the fourth child of parents Lyle and Helen Alexander. She attended Northwestern High School, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a master's in library science from The Catholic University of America.

Martha worked in various institutions of higher education throughout her illustrious career, including George Washington University, University of Louisville, and University of Missouri, where in 2002 she retired from her role as Libraries Director after nearly 12 years of service.

Martha is survived by her sister Alice King, daughter Elaine Bowman, son-in-law Tad Bishop, grandchildren Tony, Rae, and David, a nephew, six nieces and their families.

Martha enjoyed reading, following sports – especially baseball, spending time with friends and family, picking out thoughtful gifts, and contributing to the betterment of her community. She was a beloved neighbor, friend, aunt, cousin, sister, mom, and grandmother. Martha will be remembered for her sense of humor, her amazing memory for recalling stories and events, her steadfast recognition of birthdays and anniversaries, her love of information and learning, her generosity and caring spirit, and her open mind and warm heart.

Consistent with her wishes, loved ones are encouraged to share memories with one another, in lieu of a memorial service.

Donations in Martha's honor may be made to the University of Missouri Friends of the Libraries, https://library.missouri.edu/giving/friends/, or to The Orthodox Church of Saint Matthew, P.O. Box 2003, Columbia, MD 21045, https://www.stmatthewoca.org/donate.

She was a special lady. Mom & I enjoyed working under her at MU Ellis Library. Also, glad that I got to talk about cats with her. She was very helpful with information regarding diabetes in cats & gave great tips on how to give the shots. I could not thank her enough. She will be missed.

Martha helped me so much when I was just starting my librarian career in the early 1980s. Even though she was the university librarian, she went out of her way to encourage me and assist me in my job search. Fortunately, with her help, I landed my dream job, which I still have today! When I think of Martha, I think of her kindness, her intellect, her sense of humor, and her dedication to lifting others up.

Martha sent us book! In fact, Bill and I had a book exchange annually with her. And then we found time to talk about the books. She was an intellectual who loved all kinds of books, as long as they were well-written. She was also a warm and loving person.
