Martin Chaikin Obituary

Martin Chaikin, 96, of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024.

Martin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Louis Chaikin and Pearl (Okun) Chaikin. He graduated from Forest Park High School in 1945 and served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948 as a veteran of World War II.

After his military service, Martin pursued his education at Washington College and later at Centre College, where he studied business. He embarked on a successful career in the home improvement industry, founding The Window Place, where he specialized in replacement windows, doors, and siding.

His dedication and expertise earned him recognition as a legend in the industry, receiving accolades from Dave Yoho Associates, one of the highest honors in the field.

Throughout his life, Martin cherished his family and friends. He enjoyed competing in sports, particularly golf, and was an avid card player and singer. He loved dining out and shared his passions with those around him.

Martin was known for his hard work, generosity, and unconditional love for his family. His childlike zest for life remained with him throughout his years, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

"Marty touched the lives of many people and always helped anyone—whether family, friend, or just someone in need—without conditions."

Martin is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen Chaikin, and his siblings: Albert Chaikin, Florence Spiro, Lottie Plaut, Esther Levy, and Lionel Chaikin. He is survived by his daughter Dawn Chaikin; sons Tom Chaikin and Mark Chaikin; grandchildren Sean Chaikin, Dylan Chaikin, Lauren Chaikin, and Kevin Chaikin; and siblings Fil Chaikin, Francis Chaikin, and Rose Grossman.

Martin Chaikin's legacy of love, kindness, and hard work will forever be cherished by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held on November 23, 2024, at Joseph Gawler's Sons at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow. Interment will take place on November 25, 2024, at Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens in Baltimore, Maryland, at 2 p.m. The family invites you to visit JosephGawlers.com to sign the online guest book and to view the service live.

Dawn, Tom and Mark- Offering Condolences on the passing of your Father. The Chaikin Family certainly has always been an important part of the Varvaro Family. Your Mom was my Godmother & your Dad was a friend to my Father almost the entirety of their lives. Thinking of each of you during this time.

Marty Chaikin was an intimidating figure in my life as a friend, competitor, entrepreneur, and just plain fun guy to do anything with! I, especially, enjoyed his many stories about his life in his final years and am truly thankful for his friendship and generosity in "taking the tab" during the many dinners we enjoyed together with Mary and after Mary left as a widower. Marty knew how to compete at anything as evidenced in golf and his businesses that the whole Chaikin family thrived in. I will miss hearing his voice and positive encouragement he always offered me as a husband to my "Sweetiepie" (as Marty would always say) and in my own legacy that exists in my 2 sons. God welcomes Marty Chaikin home and blesses all who knew him. Seeya there, Marty!
