MARTIN SABO Obituary
The Hon. MARTIN OLAV SABO February 28, 1938 - March 13, 2016
Survived by beloved wife of 52 years, Sylvia (Lee) Sabo; treasured daughters, Karin (Mantor) and Julie; their husbands, Nicholas Mantor and Peter Baatrup; six grandchildren who brought him joy, Emily, Thomas, John, Sarah, Jakob and Oskar; adored sister, Anna Marie Huesers, and delightful nieces, Klara and Christine. He respectfully served his community 46 consecutive years as an elected official (18 MN House. 28 US Congress), listening more than he spoke and delivering more than he promised. He had the second-longest tenure in either house of Congress in the state''s history. At the time of his death he was the longest consecutively elected public official in Minnesota history. Received a BA from Augsburg College, 1959. Minnesota House of Representatives 1960-1978. Minority leader 1969-72, Speaker 1973-78. US House of Representatives 1979-2006. Chaired Budget Committee 93-94. Served on the Appropriations Committee his entire career. After retiring, served another passion, the Twins, on the Ballpark Authority overseeing Target Field; Co-chaired, National Transportation Policy Project, Bipartisan Policy Center; Worked with Sabo Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg; Board, Growth and Justice. The University of Minnesota''s Humphrey School of Public Affairs has a Lecture Series and endowed scholarships in his name. The Martin Olav Sabo Bridge along the Midtown Greenway spans Hiawatha Avenue. Memorials appreciated: Sabo Endowment Fund at Augsburg College, 2211 Riverside Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55454. My husband, Andrew Rogness, had the privilege and joy of working for Martin Sabo in 1975. His love of democracy and dedicated service to all was a lifetime inspiration to us both. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us all.

I worked at the MN House when Martin was speaker. He was a man of integrity, smarts, .... and sweetness. I will always remember seeing his many times crossed out, handwritten notes of a motion to allow women to wear pants onto the House floor. (Can you imagine?!) He was rightly proud of the Minnesota Miracle school aid funding, as well as block grants to counties for human services. He worked across the aisles with honesty and humility. A great spirit. My sympathies go to the whole family.

Sending condolences to the Sabo family on the loss of Martin. It was a privilege and honor to have known him and call him family. The last time I saw Martin was at my mother's funeral in July, 2014. It was so special to us that he was able to attend the service along with Sylvia. My grandson was in awe of how many presidents he had worked with over the years. So glad we got the chance to chat that day.I remember taking my Mother to Martin's retirement gathering at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. My mom was so proud of her cousin, she was just beaming that day. Martin has left quite a legacy behind him and will be missed.

Without Martin Sabo this Sunday is a little grayer. It always seemed as if he personally cared for every Minnesota resident. He worked so hard for all of us. He was one of the truly great legislative leaders. There are too few like him who give so much. Our hearts are heavy.
