MARY LEITHAUSER Obituary

Mary Bryan Leithauser
Known as Bryan, passed away peacefully at Sibley Hospital on October 20, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong Washingtonian, Bryan was born in 1946 to Walter and Frances Powell and grew up in Cleveland Park with her sister, Judy.  After graduating from Centre College, Bryan took a job on Capitol Hill during the excitement of the Watergate era. She left the Hill to work on Capital Losses with James Goode, Curator of the Smithsonian Castle. She later accepted a position at the National Gallery of Art, where she met her husband, Mark Leithauser. They dated for three weeks, and were married three months later. They were married for forty-five years.  A constant volunteer, she caught the attention of the Headmaster of St. Albans school, who asked her to develop the Social Service Program. As Social Service Director, she partnered with many local charities including So Others May Eat and The Samaritan Inn, and brought students as far afield as Utah and Wyoming to work with Habitat For Humanity. After fifteen years with St. Albans, she retired and continued volunteer work. She was a dedicated member of the Cathedral Flower Guild, helping to create their glorious arrangements. Bryan was an avid reader, fierce bridge player, animal lover, bargain hunter, and most importantly an adoring and beloved mother and grandmother. She had a wildly funny sense of humor, which will be sorely missed by her friends and family. Bryan is survived by her husband, Mark; her sister, Judy; son, Hamilton, his wife, Anna, and their two daughters, Georgiana and Frederika; her daughter, Anna McIntosh, her husband, Hugh, their two daughters, Mary and Lucy. She will be missed by her dog, Gordon.  A memorial service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Friday, January 21, 2022, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, The Samaritan Inn and The Humane Society.

I was completely sadden about the news of Bryon passing. I will miss her great smile, her great sense of humor (especially if she can put up with my jokes), and of course, (My dancing partner, when Mark is singing the blues on stage, with the Desperados, Bryon and I would share a dance or two). Missing YOU Bryon!

With a constant twinkle in her eyes, Bryan was so much fun to work with at St. Albans. I got to know her as a colleague, as a St. Albans parent, and as a friend. She supported me as a young teacher with laughter, insight, and good advice. I loved running into her, whether it was at Cactus Cantina or a Walkmen show. She could always brighten my day. Rest in Peace, dear Bryan.

Bryan and I were close friends at Centre. She was wonderful and I miss her being in this world.

Very sorry to learn of Bryan's passing. I knew Bryan and her sister Judy starting nearly 70 years ago, when their mother Frances tried heroically to teach me to play the piano. Bryan was a wonderfully gracious and caring soul. Rest in peace.
