Mary Marks Obituary

Mary Ann Marks of Spotsylvania and Arlington, Virginia was born on June 8, 1940 in Fayetteville, NC. She passed away at home in Spotsylvania, Virginia surrounded and loved by her family on February 17, 2025 exactly one year and six months following the passing of her husband, Don. Mary Ann was 84 years. She graduated from Hammond High School (1958) in Alexandria, VA, and Mary Washington College (1962) in Fredericksburg, VA .
Mary Ann enjoyed working at the Library of Congress in DC; during this time she met her husband Don on a blind date on New Year's Eve 1963. They married on June 19, 1965. Mary Ann stayed at home to raise their children Ann and Tom. Mary Ann was a founding church member at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA, attending since she was 12 years old. She was active with their church Y'all's group, and Don and she volunteered as Sunday School Superintendents. Together they enjoyed spending time at their oceanfront condominium in Ocean City, Maryland with family and friends. She and Don also enjoyed cruising. Mary Ann volunteered at Oakridge Elementary, reading and discussing books with students. She spent many hours driving her kids to various extracurricular activities.
Mary Ann returned to work when Ann and Tom were older. She enjoyed working at the White House Connection, near the White House in D.C. and later worked for Northern Virginia Family Services.
Mary Ann was an avid Redskins/Commanders fan, owning season tickets since 1963, and attending three Superbowls.
Mary Ann Marks is survived by her children: Ann Baker (J. Scott), Tom Marks (Lorraine); siblings: Susan Wilson, stepsister Cyndee Davis; grandchildren: Jessica Harris, Brittney King, Shannon Weltner (Paul), Lindsay Baker, Zachary Harris, Kimberly Urquhart (Kyle), Joseph Baker Jr.; great-grandchildren: Lydia Weltner, Kevin Weltner, and Ashton Urquhart.
She is preceded in death by her husband Donald William Marks, her parents: Col. Tom Watson Sills and Ann Gaster Sills, step mother Dorothy Sills; siblings: stepsister Madeline Budzynski, brothers-in-law: James (Jimmy) Wilson, Orin Marks, and Ted Davis.
Arrangements are as follows: The viewing is scheduled on Friday, February 28, 2025 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA, 22302 and the funeral service on March 1, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2701 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, VA, 22302. Donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church. A live stream will be available at https://wpc-alex.org/mary-ann-marks-memorial-service/ for those unable to attend in person.

Mary Ann, Don and Maryann's stepmother Dorothy Sills were dear friends of my Mother and our family. She was a sweet, sweet person and our families were close for many years MY thoughts are with her family and friends
