Mary Kate Stockner St. Clair
Mary Kate Stockner St. Clair passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at age 95. Kate, as she was known much of her adult life, was born in Havaco, WV, the third of four children born to Raymond Early and Alma Hayes Stockner. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Otis St. Clair, her siblings and their spouses, Camilla Jeanne Stockner Brunschwyler (Richard Grant), James Robert Stockner (Patricia Galbraith), Carol Ray Stockner Schell (Erwin Haskell), and brother-in-law Charles Wade St. Clair (Patricia Coley).
Kate grew up in Havaco and Welch, WV, attending the local Welch schools. She then pursued her interest in teaching, graduating from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC and Concord College in Athens, WV, with degrees in education and library science. She was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority while at Concord College (now University) and later often hosted Tri Sigma Alumnae gatherings in her home in Fairfax.
She taught high school in Gary, WV, Winston Salem, NC, and was a long-term substitute teacher in the Fairfax County, VA schools. She married Richard St. Clair on December 29, 1950 and lived in Winston Salem and Greensboro, NC and Fairfax, VA during her husband's career in the telecommunications industry. She moved to Charlottesville, VA in 2006 to be closer to her daughter and her family.
She was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church while living in Fairfax and later was a member of Meadows Presbyterian Church while living in Charlottesville.
She is survived by her daughter, Allison St. Clair Schildwachter and son-in-law, Thomas Schildwachter; her grandchildren, Brooke Schildwachter Kilfoil (Brendan), Meredith Schildwachter Wenskoski (Todd), Hayes St. Clair Schildwachter; her great-grandchildren, Ashton Evangeline, Andrew Hayes and Hugh Campbell Kilfoil, and Cashman Henry and Pryor Camilli Wenskoski, as well as 11 nieces and nephews and many cousins.
A burial service will be held at 12 p.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens on Monday, November 20, 2023, followed by a memorial service at Meadows Presbyterian Church on Angus Road at 1:30 p.m.

Good afternoon Allison, Tom and family. We are saddened to read of your mother passing. We never had the pleasure of knowing her, but in reading her obituary, her life was filled with all good and gracious gifts in service to others.
