MATTHEW MEINERS "MATT"
Matthew "Matt" Meiners, age 37, passed away Monday, July 13, 2015, after a courageous battle with stage IV rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive pediatric cancer that is extremely rare in adults.
Always a fierce competitor, Matt fought his cancer battle valiantly for eight long years. He pushed the envelope of medicine and bravely entered clinical trials and took experimental drugs with the hopes of finding a cure.
Matt Meiners started his career in management consulting working for Computer Sciences Corporation. After two years at CSC, he decided to attend law school to pursue his true passion of working in the sports industry. Over the past 10 years, Matt has held various front office positions in the NBA, most recently working for the 2014 NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs. He spent the past year focusing his energy on cancer advocacy and served on the Board of Directors for Children's Cancer - Therapy Development Institute.
Matthew graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, MD. He was inducted into the DeMatha Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in tennis and basketball. Matt received his undergraduate business degree from the University of Wisconsin where he played on one of the first UW basketball teams in the school's history to make the NCAA tournament; since then Badger basketball is routinely in the Big Dance. Matt earned his juris doctorate from Southwestern University School of Law, graduating with honors.
Matthew credited his ability to battle cancer to the extraordinary care coordination efforts of his beloved wife Amy, who was his best friend and soulmate. He is also survived by his parents Faith and Mark of Oakton, VA, and his brother Madden of Durham, NC.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home 9902 Braddock Road Fairfax VA 22032 followed by a funeral service on Monday, July 20 at 1 p.m. Private interment at Fairfax Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Cancer - Therapy Development Institute (cc-TDI) www.fmfh.comwww.fmfh.com
