Melvin Cy Youngwerth

Mel passed away peacefully at home in Germantown, MD surrounded by family. Born in Passaic, NJ, and later growing up in Cleveland, OH, he was one of five children of the late Frank and Frances Youngwerth. A U.S. Navy pilot (retired) and later FAA air traffic controller, he served his country and community with quiet dedication. He flew reconnaissance missions aboard the USS Saratoga and later trained air traffic controllers as an instructor at the FAA Training Center in Oklahoma City before returning to Leesburg, VA where he worked until retirement guiding air traffic safely through the skies.

A man of faith and action, he led church outreach programs, built homes for others, and volunteered abroad in Namibia and Cambodia. Known for his humor, integrity, and devotion to family, he lived a life of purpose and service.

Survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret, daughters MaryLynn (Stephen) Gonsalves, and Meg (Rob) Myers, grandchildren Cassandra, Andrew, Liena, Ethan, and Evan, and his sister, Margaret (Norton) Johnson. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 16420 S. Westland Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20877.
