CRONIN Michael Paul Cronin (Age 79) Died Wednesday, June 17, 2020 after battling Glioblastoma brain cancer for over 14 months. He was born March 1, 1941 in Boston, MA. to parents Hugh Smyth Cronin and Mary Dorothy (Lane) Cronin. In 1959, Michael graduated from Carrick High School in Pittsburgh, PA. before attending the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Upon his graduation in 1963, Michael underwent flight training and served as a Naval Aviator in Vietnam aboard the USS Midway and the USS Coral Sea, completing over 200 carrier landings between 1965 and 1967 as a member of the VA-23 "Black Nights" squadron. On Friday, January 13, 1967, his A-4 aircraft was shot down over North Vietnam. After spending 2,243 days as a Prisoner of War, Michael was released on March 4, 1973 during Operation Homecoming. Once home, Michael continued to serve on active duty until 1976. He retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves as a Captain in 1992, having been awarded two Silver Stars, the Legion of Meritwith Combat "V,"the Distinguished Fly ing Cross, four Bronze Stars with Combat "V," two Purple Hearts, 15 Air Medals, and three Navy Commendation Medals with Combat "V" throughout his military career. In 1976, Michael began his career as an American Airlines pilot, where he eventually met his future wife, a flight attendant. While flying full-time, Michael enrolled in Georgetown Law School and received his Juris Doctor in 1994. Michael utilized his degree by working as a lobbyist in Washington, DC for the Allied Pilots Association, and later as President and founder of the Coalition of Arline Pilots Associations. On the home front, Michael enjoyed spending time with his family outdoors and abroad. He excitedly coached his children's soccer teams, bicycled along local trails, and fed deer families in the backyard at dusk. During the summer months, Michael relished in the quiet of Cape Cod, finding treasures along the shore and sailing in the waters off Truro, MA. Michael and his wife were avid travelers and visited over 45 countries together. Mike was a past president of the Potomac Kiwanis Club, participant of the local Izaak Walton League of America and a member of Potomac Presbyterian Church. Michael was married to the late Alice Bouic of Rockville, MD from 1965 to 1978. In 1988, he married Jacqueline Sue Lint of Niles, MI., and the family resided in North Potomac, MD. Michael is survived by his wife, Jacqueline and his three children, Kevin, Jennifer, and Colleen (Matthew Murphy), his granddaughter, Emma, and three siblings, Maureen Tator (Ken), Sheila, and Hugh (Carol). My deepest condolences to Jackie and family on your loss. Mike was quite an exceptional human being. He was a man that led an accomplished, complex and varied life; like no life I have ever known. Mike and I were new-hire classmates at American and had parallel careers there. He brought a hint of sadness from his years as a POW but I found him a sensitive, serious, intelligent, gentle man of high character. He was an excellent pilot and a leader of men. God bless you, Michael. You'll always be remembered. Rest easy in God's loving arms.

Even though it's been over thirty years since I flew with Mike at American Airlines, (he was the Captain and I was the First Officer) I always remembered and tried to emulate his way of being the Captain, gentle soul, like an older brother, a good teacher, a good mentor. He touched my life and made a difference in many.

Mike Cronin was a significant part of my childhood. We spent a lot of time and created a lot of memories that have lasted my lifetime. He taught me so many things that has helped me become the man I am today.

Mike was a wonderful man to all of our friends, he was caring, fun and would also take us on cool and exciting adventures.

He was a great father figure to me growing up without a father and provided me with guidance and friendship.

He was truly a magnificent man and I will always cherish my memories of Mike and hold the time I spent with him close to my heart. I am glad to have had such a special person be a part of my life and he will be greatly missed.

My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to Jackie, Kevin, Jennifer, Colleen and the rest of the family.

The last time I saw Mike Cronin was on the hanger deck of the USS Coral Sea. Mike was our power plant (jet engine) division officer and he stopped by to chat with us for a few minutes. He was probably about 3 to 5 years older than us and aside from our respect for him as an officer, he always spoke to us like the older brother. He was firm and fair and he treated us with the same respect. He left to go prepare and suit up for the next launch. I and my squadron mates headed to the flight deck to take care of our A4E jet engines and systems before they were launched.
That day, Jan 13, 1967, Mike Cronin did not come back.
We sailors who worked under him or knew him worried and prayed that he would make it back eventually. We were so glad that he finally did get home and was able to live a wonderful life with his family and friends.
Michael Cronin was the epitome of a great Naval Officer. We were honored to have served with him.
To his family and friends, you have my deepest condolences for your loss.

Mike was such a gentle man in his later years that it is hard to imagine him as a fighter pilot, . . . but he was and he was a war hero. We will all miss Mike at our Tet dinners. It will not be the same without him. It is the end of an era. Our sympathies are with his loved ones.

Mike was a kind and wonderful friend who always had time for a chat with neighbors and friends no matter what he was doing. A kind and gentle soul, he was always there to lend a hand to a neighbor. One of my fondest memories of him was sharing a beautiful, sunny day biking the C&O Canal, starting from our driveways in N. Potomac. He was a war hero, but never boasted about his many medals or awards. He will never be forgotten.
