MICHAEL DOYLE Obituary

DOYLE MICHAEL E. DOYLE Former President and CEO of CHF International, passed away at home in Annapolis, Maryland on March 22, 2016 after a seven-year battle with cancer. Born and raised in Arizona, Mike was an independent, creative and adventurous spirit. He was among the earliest Peace Corps Volunteers, serving in Colombia from 1962 to "64, where he championed community participation in development. In 1963, Mike and Blair Hine celebrated the first overseas marriage of two serving Peace Corps Volunteers. Mike continued his Peace Corps service in senior positions in Jamaica, Paraguay, Uruguay and Guatemala. From 1972 to 1983, Mike was Deputy then Regional Director of the federal volunteer agency, ACTION, in Chicago, where he expanded support for the Senior Companion and the Retired Senior Volunteer Programs. In 1985 he was appointed Costa Rica Country Director for the Cooperative Housing Foundation (later CHF International, now Global Communities). Under his stewardship as President & CEO from 1992 until his retirement in 2010, CHF became a leader in the development arena, more than doubling the countries where it had programs to 33, and growing its operating resources more than 70-fold. Mike traveled extensively, visiting more than 75 countries to support CHF's programs and share lessons learned. He served as President of the International Cooperative Alliance's Housing Committee and on the UN Economic Commission for Europe''s Housing and Urban Management Advisory Network. Mike had a gift for connecting with people from all ranks of life. He was open to ideas and actively sought advice. Taking a cue from his own mentors, he prioritized mentoring others, sharing his passion for international development (and other interests) with a cadre of high-achieving individuals who continue to assist low-income people around the world. Outside work, Mike was a curious and indefatigable polymath. His wide interests included restoration of vintage Porsches, for which he became highly regarded. He loved to drive fast, and race cars, most notably in the Carrera Panamericana across Mexico and on the Bonneville Salt Flats. He also loved sailing, racing Snipes and Lasers and later cruising with Blair and friends on the Chesapeake and in the Caribbean. Mike's greatest passion was his family, with whom he found great joy and deep contentment in the simplest of settings. He is survived by his wife and fellow adventurer of 53 years, Blair, two sons and daughters-in-law, Alden (Karen) and Morgan (Almudena), two grandsons and three granddaughters, three sisters and a brother, and many nieces and nephews. A private celebration of Mike's life is planned for late summer. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of the Chesapeake, Global Communities, or the Stout University Madalene Scott Scholarship Fund, created by Mike's mother.

My Dear Blair,
Who could ever forget Mike and Blair Doyle in Pasto so many years ago! So many fond memories of times past. I live in the Ortega Mountains of California now, with my two sons, grandchildren and even a great grand daughter! I can't imagine life without a computer, but somehow we managed! Know that you and Mike are in my thoughts today, and I cherish those times in Colombia. I actually returned to cali, taught at the Air Force Academy for years, had bakery on the side, married and raised my family there until things got too hairy and we had to come back to the States. But my autumn years have been full with few regrets and and many rewards, so I consider myself to be very fortunate. As they say, life is what happens when you've already made the plans!
Please know that you and Mike are in my thoughts and I treasure those chapters of my life.
With fondest regards,
Jim

Dearest Blair, We just received notice of Mike's death. Our hearts break for you and your family. Regret not being in touch with you through this horrible process. I was thinking of the two of you so much in March and now I know why! That old connection still existed for me. I wish there was something we could do, but know that family and friends are doing all that they can. Prayers for you and your family are the only thing I know to do. Love to you, Judy and Jim Neese.

My beloved brother has passed. He was my mentor, friend. I tell you, a star in the heavens dimmed as he left this world. I have always loved him and always will. So long big brother...I miss you.
