I've just found out about Michael's passing.
I liked him, I liked him.
I knew him in Toronto.
He was a fine man, a mench.
May his memory be for a Blessing.

I'm not sure Motl that you have access to what we say, but you come right in front when I go over my M folder with all the other M Yiddishists. It is as if we are sitting talking about our love for YIddish.

This is six years too late and I'm not sure anybody will see this, but I had been googling Motl (Professor Rosenbush to me) as I wondered what happened to him beyond the years I knew him at UNH from 1972-1976. I took an into Russian class my sophomore year which he taught using an amazing curriculum from Harvard which made learning fun and because of Dr. Rosenbush fell in love with the language and culture. It was a small department, I believe only one other part-time professor, so we had small intimate classes - he was the most amazing human being. There was no Russian major so he helped me do a self-designed major and 90 percent of my classes were with him. He'd bring his guitar and we'd sing Russian folk songs, have borscht at his apartment in Dover. He just brough light and joy to everything and particularly my college years and experience of Russian culture. He encouraged me to attend a Slavic Workshop at Indiana University which I did one summer as well as a prequalification exam for the NSA which was held on campus (I went through the process but never got the job). I watched the video of him and it brought a big smile to my face - he was always smiling, happy, encouraging but deeply engaging and intelligent in imparting the soul of the Russian people to us. I will never forget my years with him as my guide. He was one of a kind. So sorry for your loss Marc and Bonnie? He was truly a gift - he lived in the moment and made it moment sparkle.

I am so sorry to hear about Motl's passing. I looked forward to seeing him every year at Yiddish Vokh, and it isn't going to be the same without him. The main thing I remember about him is his wonderful sense of humor. Boruch dayen emes...

"I just received the terrible news. Michael or Motl, as his Toronto Yiddish friends all affectionately called him, will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by myself and everyone here who adored him dearly. He was a cherished member of our family. To me personally he I'll always be the intelligent, talented, dynamic, inspirational human being who whipped out his ukulele at our Yiddish gatherings and led us in sing songs. He was both the life of the party as well as a deep font of knowledge which he eagerly and humbly shared. He enriched all of our lives. I feel privileged to have known him. With love and affection,

Bonnie, Sally and I feel deeply sad and hoped that Motl once again would pull through. We knew Motl on both a friendship basis and as an international Yiddish activist. His modesty and willingness to help those of us who are much less knowledgeable was a blessing and the mark of a truly compassionate man.

I knew Michael through John Wetherill. I often would come early so that I could spend time with Michael. He was one of the nicest, friendliest, and positive people I have known. I will miss our chats and think of him often. My deep condolences to you and your family.
