MICHAEL SHINAY Obituary

SHINAY MICHAEL J. SHINAY (Age 67) Boston, MA, formerly of Reston, VA, and late of Hingham, MA, died peacefully with his family on January 23, 2016, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on February 1, 1948, in Whitehaven, England, the son of the late Paul and Theresa Shinay of Waterville, ME, where he grew up. He received his B.A. in American Government and Politics in 1969 from the University of Maine, Orono, and his M.B.A. in 1989 from the University of Vermont, Burlington. Mr. Shinay was known for his long and illustrious career with the U.S. Postal Service. He began as a postal management intern in Washington, DC in 1969. In 1974, he returned to his home state of Maine, where he worked as director of customer services, director of support and director of finance for the Portland management center. He then served as the manager and postmaster of Burlington, Vermont from 1981 to 1988, while also serving as the acting marketing director for the Northeast region during his final months in Vermont. He returned to Washington in 1988 to take on the position of executive assistant to the Postmaster General until 1992. In March of 1992, the then-Speaker of the House, Thomas S. Foley, appointed him to the temporary duties as postmaster of the House Post Office until the abolishment of the position in April of that same year. He then served as director of House Postal Operations from April of 1992, until January of 1995. After leaving the House, he returned to postal headquarters as consumer advocate, and was named a vice president in 1998. He retired from the postal service in 1999 after 30 years of service. Mr. Shinay''s incredible institutional knowledge and diverse postal career made him a highly sought after consultant. He worked as a director with PricewaterhouseCoopers, and ended his career with IBM Business Consulting and Global Business Services as an associate partner. He officially retired in 2013. After retiring, he happily returned to New England where he could be close to the things he loved most-his family, his grandchildren, and summers on Messalonskee Lake in Oakland, ME where he was a seasonal resident. Throughout his career he was known for being a great mentor and teacher, so he continued that work by being a substitute teacher in the Cohasset public school system, as well as an AARP tax-aide, assisting seniors with their taxes. Mr. Shinay is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jeanne; daughter, Katie Ames and husband, Brook of Burlington, MA; son, Jonathan and wife, Ashley of Scarborough, ME; brother, Paul and wife, Joan of South Portland, ME; brother, Richard and wife, Celeste of Scarborough, ME; and sister, Lisa Penn and husband Greg of Lexington, KY. He also leaves behind his grandsons, Carter and Jackson Ames, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, January 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Parish, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME. Interment will be at Saint Francis Cemetery in Waterville, ME at a later date. Mr. Shinay''s family extends sincere thanks to the dedicated team of doctors and nurses at South Shore Hospital, Brigham and Women''s Hospital, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, for their tremendous skill, care, and compassion.
